Coding - the new LatinLilith.C wrote:
Started with 8080 assembly
... I started with PDP-10 assembly, then went to 6502 followed by Z80. Then took a course - for FUN; didn't count toward degree - in VAX Assembler (Q-word fun!). Then I learned FORTRAN, then C, the Pascal, then (SHUDDER) COBOL. I don't think I did anything in BASIC until I had a job using HP computers running Rocky Mountain Basic. Fun memories. Thanks for the thread, etc...

Coding - the new LatinYes. I started out in a digital electronics course path where we built a 4-bit computer from discrete components (the only "Large-scale" IC we were allowed to use was a barrel shifter we used to make a simple adder). When I later switched to programming, I couldn't believe how LITTLE those people knew about the hardware they were using to execute their code. I think programming should not be taught until AFTER some basic understanding of how the hardware functions. Reminds me of people who have no clue how their car works and then get upset because the engine seizes with no oil in it (true story).

You know you've been coding too much when...When you dream about, not writing code, but BEING code. The curly-braces are ticklish  --Owen

Got to call the IT department...Consider yourself EXTREMELY lucky that he did not reformat the hard drive and re-install the O/S!

Why I resigned from my jobASSEMBLY? Wimp! We need to all go back to plugging in patch-cords and flipping switches to directly program the circuits. None of this wimpy machine abstraction! ;P

Cost of a tetanus shot in the USUmmm, wasn't there a news story recently where some prominent politician came to the USA to get medical treatment because Canada did not offer the treatment he needed? For any price.... FWIW...

Finally broke the 32 bit barrierYeah, Speed Racer was on probably 10 years or so BEFORE those shows. Except Star Trek...

Win Vista / Win 7 Black Screen of DeathYou don't have to run it while the problem happens. Just run it. My machine showed the USB error multiple times.

Do you dream about programming?randomusic wrote:
Anyone else having such dreams occasionally?
Regularly. Not as bad as the dreams I used to have when I was in college and I had a Calculus class that ended at 10pm: I used to dream that I was an Integral. It was always really weird to be dreaming that a concrete object (me) was embodied in an abstract mathematical concept (really abstract while trying to get my mind around it!). I usually ended up with my body twisted into the integral squiggle at some point....

Working in America question [modified]So, your $50 - $60 per day is rather low pay (unless it's not taxed much: here in US, for tech folks, the income-tax rate is around 28% (very rough estimate) -- not including sales taxes).

Working in America question [modified]But what are your expenses (rent, food, etc)? I'm wondering what the equivalent for say Columbus, Ohio would be?

There's No "I" in TeamWhat language-centric piece of junk that is! In what other language (Spanish, German, French) would you be able to spell "team" and come up with it missing a personal pronoun for self (do those other languages have a single letter expression meaning self - I think it would be "yo" in Spanish)? What does spelling a single word, missing a single letter have to do with anything anyway? Just plain stupid (oh, there's an "I" in that word! Oh my! We all must be STUPID!) Stepping away from the keyboard now....
