  • Second time's a charm =(
    P Phil J Pearson

I find it not unusual to do quite a lot of work on something in order to find out why it's a bad idea. It takes some fortitude then to ditch it and take a new approach, but it's almost always the best plan. Also, it never seems to take so long or be such hard work the second time.

  • My Horoscope Has Been Telling Me To Expect Big Things Heading My Way Lately.
    P Phil J Pearson

That reminds me of an incident that occurred to me while I was visiting a customer in the US. I was driving a rented Lincoln Town Car (ridiculous car but it had plenty of room and impressed customers) on I94 south of Detroit. It started to snow heavily and the road surface became very slippery. A lorry jack-knifed a little distance ahead so I cruised to a stop. The woman driving the minivan behind was not paying sufficient attention and was late braking. She almost stopped but slid gently into the back of me. The impact was barely noticeable but when I opened the driver's door, the front edge was catching on the bodywork ahead. It was apparent that the whole car had been shortened by about 15mm! I have never rented a Lincoln since.

No!! Step back from the keyboard. Never code while you have a superpower. Been there, done that. When you come back to it a few arbitrary-time-periods later, you won't understand it. You'll spend ages trying to figure out why it works perfectly and then more time rewriting it so that you'll understand it next time (which you probably won't).

  • Woah. I hate new glasses.
    P Phil J Pearson

I just got a pair with "occupational lenses" for the first time. They're like varifocals except they vary from close-up to medium distance. Now I can read the smallest text on my monitors comfortably without having to tilt my head back! I love them, but I sometimes forget to change glasses when I go outside - I'll have to get used to that. My distance vision has gradually improved over the last few years and it's now almost perfect, so I can do without glasses for driving etc. although I usually wear my normal glasses so I can properly see the displays on the dashboard.

You could do all sorts of theoretical calculations but none of them would take into account the complex loads applied by kids (or grandkids) swinging on the end of the arm or by the cleaner doing whatever cleaners do (not currently understood by humans).

They are to be aquitted and exonerated. "Pardoned" suggests that they were guilty but are being "let off". I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that. They were and are, in almost every case, completely innocent.

:rose: Deepest condolences. :rose: I have been missing your posts and had no idea why you weren't around. I can only begin to imagine how difficult and horrible it must be for you. Find some way to hold on. I imagine that "Time is a great healer" sounds stupid to you right now. It doesn't heal your loss but it does allow a different perspective on it and allow you to find a way to cope. You have given wise advice to others here in the past. I wish I were able to do that for you. In my (very non-expert) view, counselling could do that for you better than chemicals (including alcohol). Best wishes ...

I selected to restart and then went to make a cup of tea. When I came back it was ready for me to log in again. It actually took less time than usual to log in and be useful again. Less than 5 minutes all told. My PC is reasonably speedy but it's not nuclear powered or liquid nitrogen cooled.

  • Samsung Monitor (Smart TV) woes
    P Phil J Pearson

I have an LG 4k TV (my 3rd LG in a row). Display quality is excellent. I don't use it as my main monitor (its main purpose is as a TV) but as a monitor on a mini-PC I have in the lounge. There are no issues with that. (There is an option to turn off overscan for the relevant input, which is important, and it remembers the setting.) The TV has good built-in apps for Netflix and other stuff. It remembers the last selected source. You can create "shortcuts" on the remote (you hold down a number for 2 seconds) and use one to select a particular source. The TV's OS and apps have been udated numerous times over the years and none of them have been intrusive. There are plenty of junk channels and apps available but they're not forced on you. Incidentally, you can turn WiFi (and wired EtherNet) on and off easily.

  • I have retired my MS keyboard, after a short life.
    P Phil J Pearson

I have had a Microsoft Comfort Curve keyboard for years and it gets heavy use every day. Only left, right and down cursor keys are missing their markings; all the others are completely intact. (No, I don't play games or anything like that - just coding and documentation.) Oh, and part of the Microsoft logo is worn away. It's not a brilliant keyboard (it makes lots of tryping mistakes) but it's good enough that I don't want to be looking for anything else.

I used to do such raw coding and also had a lot of fun doing it - even when I got to be doing it as part of my day job. What I can't for the life of me now remember is how I ever found out even how to begin, at a time when there was no Internet! (Yes, kids - there was such a time, long long ago.)

  • How did you find find CodeProject?
    P Phil J Pearson

In July 2000 I was looking for some guidance on creating a grid control for MFC. Google pointed me at Chris's article (MFC Grid control 2.27[^]) and I soon abandoned the idea of writing my own. This first introduction to CodeProject was such a positive experience that I signed up and just kept coming back, more for the community than for the free code. I feel a little guilty that my contributions over the years have been meagre compared to what I have got out of it.

  • Oh gawd. I'm so glad I don't code in a Cube Farm ...
    P Phil J Pearson

I'm also glad I don't code in a cube farm (I would never do that!) but I do make cautious use of the audio cues. (I work alone in my own office in my own home.) I sometimes leave a long-running debug session to continue while I get on with something else. A discreet "ding" when it hits a breakpoint is quite helpful.

You have the seeds of an answer in your question. Write an app to keep track of your alcohol intake. Time and date, beverage type and quantity, raw alcohol equivalent, estimated metabolisation time. Graphs of predicted blood alcohol concentration over time ... You might even get some insights into the ideal blood alcohol level for optimal coding (or the reverse).
