Is it a Current Cost meter? If so, it's not an Ethernet connection, even though the socket on the meter is an RJ45. It's actually an RS232 serial connection through an RJ45 to USB cable, with a "serial to USB" driver needed on the PC. Then you talk to it like a normal COM port.

A little off topic to begin with, but this board is designated to contain questions about COM where the abbreviation stands for the "Component Object Model" and not the serial communications port. Just in case you had them mixed up. ;) Now to a suggestion for your question: Develop a simulator for your device, but instead of a serial port you can use named pipes. Create the named pipe in your simulator with ::CreateNamedPipe() and then open it with ::CreateFile() in your application that is supposed to communicate with your future device. You will be able to use the same API as when using a real serial port, but calls to ::SetCommState() and such will return FALSE. You will, however, be able to build the complete communication logic and the protocol and leave it unchanged when you open the real serial port instead of a named pipe. I've used this technique several times in situations very similar to yours, which made it possible for me to develop client applications without the hardware. SQL Server 2008 was never going to be ready in the first half of this year. The February 'launch' event was always going to be a marketing event, and I actually thought all 2008 products were going to miss it, so Visual Studio 2008 coming out at the end of last year was a surprise. I think Windows Server 2008 is going to miss as well. I'd go with 2005 SP2 for new systems right now. Only hold up if you actually need any of 2008's new features[^] immediately. There are a few new data types in there, particularly the spatial data types, but largely it's little tweaks to make it more predictable and improve performance in some areas. I have no idea. In my quest to get my hands on sample code, I have accumulated so may samples code, ePages etc. This seems to me from a book that have labs and or modules. The one module, Mod08 has three samples, DataFormWizard1, DataReader and XMLData. This is about all I know. And there is no indicatoion in the sample code wher it is coming from. Thanks P
