  • New Monitor Advice
    P pivertt

Aren't you better off with 2 smaller (and cheaper) monitors? I was thinking that I also "wanted" 1 big screen but now I have 2nd hand 23 inch monitors, giving me a total width of 1 meter where a 27inch is just 67cm. I tried a 27 inch screen but I just kept resizing windows, now I just drag it to one of the screens (or laptop screen) and double click for full screen mode. Ok, I know that PowerToys has a great tool for that (fancy zones) but it kept popping up when not needed. But I guess it all depends on what you use the screen for :)

  • is it me?
    P pivertt

I saw an ad for a webdesign company but I have my doubts about the url. The name was "web one", nothing wrong with that. The url is webone.be or am I the only one who finds it funny :) Probably am. It's friday...

  • The joys of being "the computer guy" (rant)
    P pivertt

I have read much of the thread (but not all of it). So it can be that you mentioned it already but perhaps that person is waiting for YOU to contact her. You are the specialist in her eyes so she doesn't want to bother you with "is it ready yet"-messages. Perhaps she misunderstood you when you said to call you when she had the time to finish the installation. People are not used to that kind of service any more :-) So instead of getting all frustrated, talk to her. This must the unique, once in a lifetime case where person A said something and person B misunderstood. Since you are a computer guy, you know that never ever happens.

  • Do we build like a house or like a car
    P pivertt

Hi all, it struck me yesterday: when I started in IT, we built programs (systems) like we built houses: we planned the layout, had paper documentation on every routine, it took sometimes years to finish and the investment was huge but it was going to last forever. Additions followed the same guidelines if it was allowed by building regulations. It could house everything between 1 - 10 people without major issues. Today we program like we build cars. We switch systems every 5 years, not because the current car doesn't suit our needs anymore but just because the other one has a keycard to unlock. Basically, it's just a newer version of the same. In a few years, parts will be difficult to find, cost of maintenance grows. For big parcels we need to rent a van and if we see someone with a newer version, we feel outdated. Like to hear your thoughts on that...

  • Dumbing down code so it can be maintained by junior devs
    P pivertt

I understand both sides (partially): - dev side: yes it can make sense to use the new and shiny constructs/features of a programming language. No problem with that. But did you make an effort to add comments to clarify the magic shorthand that follows? Or are you the kind of "I only write readable code" developer? I had to modify a program and after the initial "who wrote this crap", I realized it was an old program I wrote. So "dumbing down" should perhaps be perceived as KIS: keep it simple. - management side: devs are an unreliable bunch of nerds so if they leave, we can't afford to stand still for months just because some star-programmer found it beneath his dignity to add comments and only wanted to use exotic libraries. F them and send it to India (so they can mess it up). Now I'm off to my micromanagement course
