  • what is the best way?
    R RobertHarris

My Suggestion; Talk to your other half about what to do - 90% of parenting is presenting a united front. Now both of you talk to your daughter, if you have SPECIFIC concerns then raise them and talk about them, if you have nebulous worries then tell her that too. Re-iterate rules about internet safety if you feel the need but don't turn a conversation into a lecture or you WILL lose your audience pretty much instantly. Make sure that you bring everything from a point of HER wellbeing, she can't raise an argument against that. Last point, for pity's sake DON'T tell her she "HAS TO STOP" doing something...Teenagers are naturally rebellious and will take it as a challenge to ignore you and probably increase the prohibited activity. Good Luck, my daughter is now 20 so I have been through it already, keep a calm cool approach and with luck she will still be talking to you tomorrow. BTW, if she throws in the odd 'I hate you' or 'I wish I had (insert daughters friends name here) parents, they are way cooler" then just let it wash over you, they don't (usually) mean it and are trying to provoke a reaction.

  • Technical vs non-technical IT managers
    R RobertHarris

This is where having a technical manager pays off. Having been promoted from a Senior Engineer position into management I know enough to ask the team what they need to hit a deadline rather than assuming I know. I am also a vocal advocate for the guys that work with me as I know what having a useless manager is like. One of the best things from my point of view though is that the teams that I work with are using a technology stack I am unfamiliar with, so while I can give broad direction or listen to technical discussions and make intelligent comments, I do not feel the need to put my oversized management paws into the code.

  • Up The Amazon Without a Paddle
    R RobertHarris

Pete O'Hanlon states: "By default, no matter where the data is held, because Amazon is a corporate entity with its head office in the USA, the data is in US jurisdiction. That's the practical effect of the Patriot Act, and is one of the biggest bones of contention. You can have Amazon based in Dublin and hosting data in Germany, for instance, but if the US government invokes the Patriot Act for details about a person/entity, Amazon have to supply information from that subentity." However; Didn't Microsoft just win a lawsuit against the US Government that said they did not have to disclose details of emails stored on their Dublin servers? Admittedly they were trying to use the 'Stored Communication Act' and not the Patriot Act (not sure if the former is part of the latter) I'm no lawyer but doesn't that set a precedent that could be successfully used to prevent access to the Amazon data?

  • Project Document Control
    R RobertHarris

We use Google Docs and Sheets at my current place. The ability to see others who are working on a document/spread sheet and what they are doing is really helpful and you can see the revision history if needed. It works for us. The one caveat is that for basic documents/spread sheets it works well but doesn't come near to MS Office products for functionality.

  • Planning Poker
    R RobertHarris

I do, we use it every week (refining stories one week & planning the next) As a Scrum Master it is useful in as much as it allows me to estimate the work my team can complete in a two week sprint. Sometimes it works really well, other times we over/under estimate, but it all evens out. Using poker and making sure that the team have a refined backlog that covers one and a half to two sprints of work allows me to make sure the team are fully occupied. The second part to the Poker is making sure you get your velocity right for the team (another estimation) as giving them too much work is demoralising and giving too little means you are re-planning too often.

Much simpler if you call the school and tell them that the household has a vomiting bug. They want nothing to do with you until you have had 24 hours without being sick and the virus that causes this can easily last a week. The added bonus is no one wants to hear all the details on how you felt when you were throwing up.

I am in my mid forties, have high BP and have been on medication for a long time. The size of the cuff is very important (as many postings have said) so measure your arm and get the right cuff. My latest one came from lloyds pharmacy (UK) and seems to do the job well. The cuffs can be purchased separately so having multiple cuffs is simple and cheap. In January I weighed in at 336 lbs (I'm 6 foot 4 inches) and have altered my diet and exercise (both only slightly) resulting in a loss of 32 lbs to date. The aim is to get to 252 lbs (a loss of 6 stones) by the end of the year. I can safely say I can notice the difference already, my BP has dropped (it was still a touch high with the meds) and I feel shed loads better. One other point, have your doctor/nurse check your BP in BOTH ARMS. If the readings are significantly different then there could be some serious underlying causes.
