One thing people need to keep in mind with Windows 10 is that YMMV. 1) I don't mind the new look, except for a couple of things, the difference between active and in-active windows needs to be less subtle and the borders need to be a bit thicker as it can be a PITA to resize windows when using a trackpad. Live tiles are fine, on a tablet, I don't need them on a desktop start menu. 2) If you're on a domain it doesn't ask for a Microsoft ID it just keeps the domain account, other than that enter a dummy account then continue without a Microsoft ID. 3) My backups are fine, scheduled task calling wbAdmin. 4) Take note, when upgrading there is a section where it tries to set the default apps, don't click next, instead click the link on the bottom left where it says "Customize default apps" or something similar and you can de-select all the new default apps. As for Edge, it is rough, one issue is that importing favourites causes them to be placed in alphabetical order with any folders placed at the bottom also there doesn't seem to be an easy way to re-order them. 5) I don't like Google either so not sure what the problem is here.. :-D 6) Cortana, well it works, personally I think it makes more sense on a phone than a desktop, I just can't get used to talking to my computer. 7) Don't use Metro apps except in tablet mode so no comment. 8) Never had Windows Defender do anything that weird, not even on my old Core2 duo laptop. Personally I don't have a problem with the majority of Win 10 except for Edge which does need work.

If you're upgrading it's not required. As far as does MS recommend using it, well yes they do, considering that all new machines must have it turned on and it is up to the manufacturer of the machine if they put the option into the BIOS to turn it off. *** Edit *** However if you turn it on after install/updating, if may or may not configure correctly.

You don't need to turn on secure boot at all. The only update that needs to be installed is Service Pack 1, I had 62 updates waiting when I did the upgrade and there was no problem.

This may be a bit late, but outside of an actual network issue such as a blocked port the connection details for live servers are; Incoming Server: pop3.live.com Outgoing Server: smtp.live.com Incoming Port (POP3): 995 Outgoing Port (SMTP): 587 Make sure that "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and "This server requires an encrypted conection" is ticked. It looks like it's no longer possible[^] to change the default email address, though I did change from an ISP based login to a hotmail login about a year ago, so I don't know why they changed it. :sigh: My suggestion, though it's not ideal, is to create an alias on the live account and use it as the address for all emails and treat the current ISP based sign in like a username, then change all the notification options to use the alias.

A wild guess is that because it is so old it probably didn't check for version info before overwriting some system files with old versions, which could cause the activation/genuine check to fail.

Why does Windows Update only show the update as 'important' rather than critical?
Becuase the people who have Windows Update set to notify and actually care about such things use something other than IE.

If you wanted to you could try to update the Vista bootloader[^] to the Win 7 version then create the VMware VMDK image and convert this to the MS VHD format[^] then see if you can do a native boot into the VHD.

I started my working life as an Avionics Tech and one thing that was drilled into us from day 1 was to never deviate from manufacturers specs and processes as to do so would open us up to legal charges if the component was deemed to be the cause of a crash, in 8 years I only had a manager want me to cut corners once as apparently it was very urgent but when told that they would have to sign the paperwork and take responsibility for the airworthiness of the component it wasn't that urgent.
