Has anyone else seen a big drop in hourly rates being offered? I've seen rates drop $5-$20/hr just in the Salt Lake City area alone. How about you?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I started using ASP.NET in 2002, when it was still a baby. Honestly, it was through a lot of trial and error. That, and a lot of double-clicking on things in the designer. It wasn't until about 6 months into the project that we (myself and the other student/co-worker) were on that we finally started to get a grasp of what was really happening. We would hit up good ole google if things got confusing, or if we wanted to learn something new, like serialization (which was new to us). Being students at the time, we were too poor to buy our school books, much less "extra" books about .NET. And no, they did NOT teach it at the university we attended, but they might now. As far as I know, the original product is still in use. It's been modified, but still there.

I realize that this might sound too simplistic, but for me, I had to first really understand the Page_ methods and postbacks before I could make something of quality. When I started in ASP.NET, I didn't know about DALs or MVCs. I came to appreciate them. Like others have said, a good quality DAL and MVC is a necessity because, even in your first ASP.NET project, you don't want to have to totally re-write it a year from now when your project grows. And yes, it will grow. One thing that you, as a C and C++ developer will need to take into account is that developing in ASP.NET for you will feel completely different than doing embedded or drivers. The main reason is that web apps aren't typically designed to care about the type of hardware you are running on. From an embedded or driver level, ASP.NET looks very high level (thank you .NET Framework). I'd be happy to help you out more when you get started. Let me know.

Well, if you are stuck on Acer, then no, but I took a quick look at Dell and they have a 24" WS for $379. I know that's only $10 less, so you may not care either way. If you are hellbent on 24" with HDMI, then that Acer is probably the one to go with. If you dropped your search down to 22", your prices drop considerably as well. At least with this monitor, you could wall mount it and hook up your TV to it too. Good luck

  • Are there any DotNetNuke developers that are still alive?
    S senylity

The way we had it implemented, it would not have to compile the core more than once. Ever. The things that did compile were the DNN website, which references the DNN libraries, and our custom modules, which we wrote in C#. We had one VS solution that was the core, and one VS solution that had the website and custom modules in it. We worked really hard to not modify the core, or at least keep our changes documented and short so that when the next version came out (which it did about every 6-8 weeks), we could upgrade without any problems. I would suggest trying our solution to your problem: splitting up your VS solutions into core DNN libraries and the website with custom modules.

  • What US states have you been in, if any ?
    S senylity

I grew up in SC, lived in CA, GA, TX, OK, currently live in UT, and I've been to many states. Let's see, besides the ones I mentioned already, been to/through: NC, VA, WV, PA, NJ, OH, IN, IL, IA, SD, Nebraska, Kansas, WY, WA, ID, NV, AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, AL, FL, TN, Kentucky, CO, AR, MS, Montana, DC (if that counts), Maryland, DE. That leaves me New England, Oregon, North Dakota, WI and Michigan. But sadly I haven't been outside the US.

  • Resharper or CodeRush
    S senylity

I would say that ReSharper is running pretty much the entire time you have VS open, examining your code and seeing what you can do better. When coding, it's analyzing everything you type, looking for ways to make it better. Helpful? Yes. Resource Hog? Yes. You know, as if VS wasn't a resource hog already. I mainly use Refactor! Pro to manage my variables, make properties, optimize using statements, convert "..." + "..." to string.format(), etc. It stays out of the way, unless you tell it to get involved. Choose wisely.

  • Which VS do you like?
    S senylity

I like VS2008 the best so far. It handles things better than its predecessor. It also depends on what you are developing, and how many references and projects you use at one time.

  • Resharper or CodeRush
    S senylity

I've used Refactor!Pro for a long time. It doesn't get too involved with your environment. ReSharper thinks it knows better than you on how to develop, and it has bogged down my VS2005 to a screeching halt before. It has helped me out before, but it also slows down the dev environment tremendously.
