C++ Linux Development on Windows -
I'm starting to really dislike Windows as a development platformbut is there another gui system on linux? isn't it just gtk or qt? pretty sure qt > gtk and while qt mayyy be < c#'s gui... it's def > win32 api :)

I'm starting to really dislike Windows as a development platformI've finished really disliking Windows as a development platform. Ya got nothin but agreement n sympathy from me. For me, Qt held all the answers. Nearly all my hobby things run on linuxes now. And it was easy. For job coding, you'll still need all the junk of course.

article: Google Chrome Is The Worst Browsergive me a break. chrome is the best browser. maybe second to firefox. chrome syncs better. firefox uses less memory. the author uses Edge, sooooooooooo - to me that means the author is insane.

Programming Languages - Fun with Rexx?I used ole Rexx on VM/CMS at Boeing circa '89 :) As far as mainframes go, VM/CMS was A OK by me. XEDIT. Ugh. That takes me back. Not terrible. But also not great :) We would always use our BIGMSG EXEC to blast each other's screens full of some silly message. Never used it on Windows, but used it on my Amiga 500. They called it ARexx over there. Fun at the time but I'll not be pickin it back up again sigh.

Drone recommendationsif you can only afford $80, Ryze Tello if you can afford $400, DJI Mavic Mini if you can afford $800, DJI Mavic Air 2 if you can afford more, well, I'm jealous and have no help for you...

Informal poll - how long does it take you to select a new laptop for a person in your life?they ALL get a chromebook cuz i WON'T maintain it. And they're like $350 for one with HD. unless they're ACTUALLY capable of keeping windows alive.

curse you Avast and Visual Studiooo...Ha ha. I see you've had to deal with .SF2s... That's what I'm tryin to avoid, mannn.
-
curse you Avast and Visual Studiooo...yeah my software synthesizer is called syn.exe... i -did- have that flagged for a while, but finally got the dang thing signed. whiiich was why i had the dir un-excluded rassin brassin frassin rassin.
-
curse you Avast and Visual Studiooo...well all i'm doin is converting a .sf2 file into a buncha .wav files. there's nothing nefarious bout that. but, you're right. i HAD my visual studio dir in the exclusion list. but then was testing my .exes being signed so i un-excluded it. sooo now i gotta re-exclude it for visual studio's sake... thanks a lot visual studio.

curse you Avast and Visual Studiooo...well it just quaranteens the .CMD file thats prob already gone. main thing is this pops EVERY time i build somethin...:(

curse you Avast and Visual Studiooo...Anybody else in the same boat? http://pianocheetah.com/etc/avast.png[^]

The never ending battle of this "ToDo" thing.i use a google drive document. one called do. one called done. It's gotta be a text file so there are no weird limits and copy/paste is easy. just a text list SORTED BY PRIORITY. Easy/important stuff at the top. So i can see/edit it on my phone at the grocery store or on my pc when I'm programming/watching tv. If it's a big enough project, it get's it's own do file. (my PianoCheetah app, building up a van for camping, building a bbq shack.) Don't go more than 5 dos deep tho ! Anything somewhat significant that's completed gets written up in done (sorted by date newes stuff at top), and I give myself a reward for bein' awesome.

Next Poll: Universal Windows Dev?After reading all the folks replying, I feel comforted to know that my initial guess about UWP was at least not terribly wrong... Stick with win32. Until it dies. Hopefully by the time that happens, Android will have device drivers, run on beefy tablets, and, well, not suck for C++ development.

What laptop do you use?really? even with all the things sticking out of it, it still takes up less space than a desktop. i've got an acer 2-in-1 (folds all the way over back into a tablet). but it's mounted on my piano stand (combo piano and development stand thingy) It's got hdmi to my 60" tv, audio to my stereo, an HD portrait monitor for coding, a coding keyboard and lightweight media keyboard (in addition to the lame built in one) - both wireless, wireless mouse, and 4 midi devices hanging off it (2 keyboards, drumset, midi pedals). soooo that takes 2 usb hubs, but i at least don't stub my toe on the dang desktop. rig[^] i've upgraded the programming keyboard since the pic to a smaller (yet same weight, slightly less CLACKY but still a little clacky) it's mounted on the side opposite where i sit on my left. can't really see it in the pic. which is kind of the point. all the usb hub hell is behind the piano hidden in the stand. As is the midi cable HELL. And power cable HELL. And audio cable HELL. Really, as long as you don't need a high power display card for games (I mean, I am a computer programmer of music junk. I don't have time for games) well, not much need for a desktop, cuz that's the only real "card" that goes inside any more. and I like to use average hardware so people using my code aren't goin "what?? do i need a supercomputer to run your program? it's DOG SLOW..." honestly, seems to me desktops are kinda goin the way of the dodo what with bluetooth, usb3, wifi, etc.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14316 - Run native Bash on Ubuntu on Windowseh, wake me up when they've fixed windowsupdate, when the control panel and startmenu don't make me waaaait for them, and when they've actually got the control panel fully integrated. i don't know why these fluffy things you mention are even being worked on when core stuff (well, ok, top level UI stuff) is broken.

Windows 10 now brokengot many devices attached to your pc? I doubt it. win10 now requires signed drivers. there are a lot of devices (like my now DEAD midi keyboard) that were distributed before the days of signed drivers and have companies not willing to update the drivers. All those devices are now dead with win10. there's a way to tell win10 to not require signed drivers that you set in the bootup sequence, but it doesn't work on my pc. The "will your pc work with win10" checker said I was good to go. It lied. Also, how many windows updates have you been through? I've been through a lot and about 25% of em have wrecked something. The win10 control panel and start menu behave like they were written in visual basic with an access db :( I kinda think Microsoft just can't do it anymore.

Predict the future of the Desktop PC MarketI don't know bout you guys, but I'd like to see my lap/desktop cpu and programs just live in my phone. a lot already do. but to toss the lap/desktop, I'm gonna need this phone to wifi/bluetooth to a dock that hooks to my 2 monitors and 12 usb devices. When this dang iot finally comes up with the one true protocol, they can talk to that dock, too. Well, the dock will BE that one true protocol. I also see windows phone dieing a horrible death. (ok ok, it already did.) I also see those stupid lightweight universal windows apps dieing a horrible death. I also DON'T want to see microsoft as a whole die a horrible death, but that seems to be the direction they're marching in. Guys! Google is eating you for breakfast! Remember when you ate IBM for breakfast? It's like that. Guys?

windows update to KB3120677 ... sigh ...installed that. double click .sln file - nothin happens. open with vs 2010 express - nothin happens. went to add/remove programs - did repair. still broke. so now looks like i get to try a new flavor of c++ express... Looks like 2015 express for desktop is my first stab... all i need is free c++ on bare metal win32 (and resedit) so hopefully i don't need a new windows sdk for resedit or debugging tools for windbg. pray for me, please :)
