In my experience working with programmers in both categories, those who have a background of knowledge of the lower level programming languages always seem to be quicker at solving more complicated problems. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule but I would say 98% of the time this is true. [^]

Google and CPNishant Sivakumar wrote:
Also, if you do a search on an article's title, no CP results turn up. I mirrored a recent article I wrote on my website. Google nicely throws up my website URL for the article, but doesn't show the CP URL. My website gets less traffic than a Jewish cartoon site would in Saudi Arabia. So this is definitely very surprising.
That's a consequence of the CP upgrade disaster. CP articles 'disappeared' from Google due to the link changes. A site like CP lives from incoming traffic. Being invisible on Google is a severe but seemingly ignored problem for the whole CP site. CP is big enough to be noticed by Google when someone form CP approaches them with the problem. Merely, CP has to talk to Google.

Samba team receives Microsoft protocol documentation"Today the Protocol Freedom Information Foundation (PFIF), a non-profit organization created by the Software Freedom Law Center, signed an agreement with Microsoft to receive the protocol documentation needed to fully interoperate with the Microsoft Windows workgroup server products and to make them available to Free Software projects such as Samba. Microsoft was required to make this information available to competitors as part of the European Commission March 24th 2004 Decision in the antitrust lawsuit, after losing their appeal against that decision on September 17th 2007 .... If you think there's a better service (notice I'm not saying interface but mail service) who has it?
Well, Google offers free POP access, Yahoo not.

I'd probably pay to use my own domain instead of ...@gmail.com

A LINQ book to (probably) avoidmartin_hughes wrote:
Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in C# 2008[^] I was expecting great things from this book, but after 3 days with it I'm highly disappointed. Given the "Pro" in the title, I was expecting very in-depth coverage of just about every feature of LINQ with extensive code examples.
'Pro' is Latin and means something like 'for'. 'Pro LINQ' may be translated as 'Towards LINQ'.

Speed up CP with FF3Use Firefox 3 Beta 1 and everything is faster, even (current and future) CP forums. Prefer Portable Firefox 3 Beta 1[^] because: "All you have to do is download, extract/install it, and you’ll be playing with Firefox 3 Beta 1. You also don’t have to worry about messing up your existing Firefox profile since it is all self-contained in the single Portable Firefox folder." One drawback so far: existing FF bookmarks cannot be imported (at least not the thousands I have).

Negative effect of Article link changesCP violated one of the fundamental rules of the Web ("Never change your links!"). Now it gets punished: Google doesn't find CP articles any more, at least temporarily. Try Maunder Grid Control[^]

Yahoo mailVA_ wrote:
How?
The interface provides a very 'desktop-like' experience. Google tries to move in the same direction with the new interface. OTOH, I dislike GMail's 'threaded' mail organization which cannot be turned off. Yahoo's disadvantage is the non-free Pop access.

Monitor ElevatorBrady Kelly wrote:
Nearly everywhere I've worked, and in nearly every workplace I've visited, a fair number of people have their monitors on boxes, books, or whatever raises it enough off the desk to be properly eye level.
Yes, some people do it but it's unhealthy and causes pain in neck and shoulders. You become accustomed to looking 'down' to the monitor within a few hours and avoid these problems.

Question about domain names.CataclysmicQuantums wrote:

Some people exploit those possible variants and esp. typos in domain names to make money. Compare e.g. http://www.php.net/[^] http://www.php.org/[^] or http://www.cafeaulait.org[^]/ http://www.cafeaulait.com/[^]
