That's nothing. When I was a wee 'un, I had to calculate pi to completion. We couldn't round like these lazy kids do today.

If we are going down that road, I would submit that "I was wrong" is the longest phrase in the world. It takes years to say, if you can ever actually get the whole thing out.

  • Developer Job Interviews
    T Tim Corey

One method to figuring this out is to have them do the work. While you probably don't want to hire them on a conditional basis, you might be able to contract out to them. Hire the best candidates as consultants for your company. This might be just a small job (10 hours or so) or it might be a 3 month gig, depending on your situation and what the interviewees can/will do. The longer you work with a person, the better you will know whether they are worth their salt or not. By hiring them as a consultant, it is a win-win. The candidate gets paid for their work and the best one(s) get offered a position. This doesn't work everywhere or with every situation/candidate but it is an effective method when you can employ it.

  • Windows 8
    T Tim Corey

Having been using Windows 8 for the past couple months, I wouldn't say I agree. Sure, it is a paradigm shift, just like Windows 95 was but it isn't horrible. Once you figure out that the start menu is now full-screen (the Metro desktop), things become a lot clearer. Personally, I hate going back to Windows 7 now (it took me a few weeks before I could say that). Search is amazing, the integration of touch is actually really helpful, and the metro app look and feel (full screen, no menus visible, etc.) actually works. There is a lot left to do to get it right, but it is a great attempt at a new way of looking at the PC/tablet/phone. You cannot innovate if you aren't willing to leave the safety of the known behind. Iteration is not true innovation.

I have had a lot of success with SyncFusion. They have done a great job competing with Telerik. I was thinking about purchasing their Win8 toolkit when I saw this post. I immediately looked into it, tried it out, and made the purchase. It cost me $195 to get the $100 kit, but I get all of the other tools, notably the ASP.NET MVC ones I've been wanting, so it was a great deal. Thanks so much.

  • Articles needing approval links
    T Tim Corey

Every day I go through the articles, blogs, and tips that need approval and I review them. Since the update, the article links in this section do not change color after I have clicked on them. The blog and tip links still change color but the article ones do not. This makes it difficult to keep track of which articles I have reviewed and which ones I have not, especially when the author might have made a change and re-submitted it for review. Is this something that could be addressed? It isn't an urgent matter but it is something that takes time out of my day every day. Thanks for all your hard work. The site does look really great.

  • I know that it's a different Time Zone
    T Tim Corey

Yeah, I was wondering about that. If you have one, you don't need one. If you don't have one, you can't win one (well, it is going to be very hard to at least). Maybe that is why they delayed the contest - they can't figure out how to handle that little snag.

  • Anyone do any life coaching on the side?
    T Tim Corey

I found myself needing to hire college students fresh out of school in order to keep the payroll down. I ended up teaching them how to work, but I found myself also teaching them how to live. I actually started to structure that into my plans so I could be a bit more intentional about it. I found that if I didn't work on the whole person, things tended to fall apart at work. In a way, I guess I became their life coach. I still keep in contact with a couple of them, even after they (and I) moved on. Most of my experience was very similar to being a dad to them. I found that the best management/coaching books on the subject ended up matching a lot of the things that are said in good parenting books (especially the parenting for teens books). The summary of everything I found is as follows: Care about them as a whole person. If you do that, you are well on your way to being an excellent life coach, or whatever you call it.

  • Microsoft Dynamics Jobs
    T Tim Corey

Twitter. Seriously, reach out to true people to people networks like Twitter. Get personal recommendations and personal advertising. Hitting bit job sites (Monster, etc.), or even LinkedIn, won't get you more than the typical candidate pool (possibly one good candidate per 50). Person to person recommendations don't get as many candidates, but they get a better class of candidate. Look for the user groups for Dynamics and talk to them. They should know people who want a new position.

  • Exceptionally explained books
    T Tim Corey

I can understand that. I do think they can go too far in the drawings, etc. but to me that is more of an minor gripe because they keep bringing me back to the content in a different way. The constant review and building on what was already learned solidifies my understanding in a way that a "cover it once and you will know it" textbook just doesn't do. The other part of this is how you learn. One of the things I have found is that I learn best when someone shows me how to do it rather than reading about it. That is why I love Pluralsight. They show me how to do various things in a manner that is easy for me to comprehend and retain.
