Since the software development field really started to become mainstream around 1980 (which is only 27 years ago) and really took off around 1984 it becomes more clear why there are less developers over 45, and even fewer over 50. The people who started in the early 80s are really the first generation of mainstream programmers. And is mostly made up of people in their late 30s to early 40s. Give it another 10 years and you will see many developers over 45. Troy

What website would you model your business website after?I noticed that you mentioned that the dundas.com web site does not make it easy to download or purchase. The top of every page has a standard menu that lets you go directly to the purchase page, and the download page (along with other popular links). Since you missed this, I am wondering if other people miss this as well. It would be great to get feedback from you and others about our top menu and overall site navigation. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Troy Marchand Dundas Software Ltd.

I have Dundas Gauge for .NET Version 1.6 [for Visual Studio 2005 ] can I use it with .NET 2003We make versions of the Dundas Gauge product for .Net 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 So, as long as you install the version for VS 2003 then everything is fine. If you only received the 2005 version, just email or call your sales rep at Dundas and ask for the VS2003 version as well (you will recieve it at no extra charge). Manager Interview - HelpJoanne, One of the largest challenges when creating questions for Interviewing people is to ensure that the questions (and conversation in general) do not lead them to the answer you are looking for. Here is an example of what I mean: "We have a casual work environment here. Do you enjoy working in a casual work environment?" I am sure you can guess the answer that you will receive. So try and make sure that there is no indication of what you are looking for before you ask. Here are some questions that do not lead the interviewee, and allow for them to express style, personality, interest, and knowledge: “What do you believe are the top qualities that make for a great manager?” “What do you believe are the qualities that make for a bad manager?” “From your previous work experience, what tasks did you enjoy the most?” “From your previous work experience, what tasks did you enjoy the least?” As you probably noticed, I also like to ask questions that go to both extremes. Another thing I find to be very important in an interview is for the interviewee to ask questions. If they don’t ask on their own then I generally ask “do you have any questions for me about this position or our company?” If the person does not ask questions that help them get a better understanding of the position and company, it generally indicates that this person will be a follower instead of a leader. (The quality of their questions will be a great indicator of their knowledge and motivation.) Questions such as “What is your weakest skill?” generally do not work, since most people answer “I take on too much and work too hard”. Instead I try and rework such questions into “If you could pick one skill to improve, what would it be?” with this I generally get a much better result. Basically ensure your questions are pointed enough so that they cannot skirt around the answer. Although I have just quickly glossed over this subject, I hope this helps. If you would like to have more of my “two cents”, then please just ask. Troy Dundas Software -- modified at 15:09 Sunday 19th February, 2006

MFC and .NETYes it is possible to use Dundas' .Net controls in MFC. In fact there have been enough clients who do this Dundas' technical support has made MFC wrapper classes to make it even more straight forward. Troy Marchand Dundas Software

S. Hawking on Bush, Stemcell, Mars and the UniversePersonally I think the whole idea of sending a man to mars in the near future is just an ego boast. Just image if that money was actually spent on something more useful, like education, medicine, and alternative fuel sources, etc.

What is the maximum number of hours you spent at workThe longest I have gone is 38 hours straight stopping only for bio breaks and food. At the end I did accomplish what I needed, however I slept for about 20 hours afterwards. Back in my earlier days pulling a 20+ hour day was a weekly experience. But these are the things one must do to help build a company from scratch. Now since I have paid my dues they are definitely a thing of the past, plus I’m too damn old to keep that nonsense up anymore. A better question is: have you worked more hours than an average person does in a lifetime? Which from the brief research I did says 88,000 hours for continuously employed people. I figure I will hit this goal by age 40 :wtf: Troy Marchand Dundas Software

Getting Dundas gauges to work with Visual C++.netfor use within MFC I do not know the details myself. However if you send in an email to support@dundas.com they can send you the information you need. Just let them know you want to use the gauge in an MFC project. I believe that they have a wrapper class you can use. Troy

Getting Dundas gauges to work with Visual C++.netAre you tring to use Managed C++ or use the control in an MFC application? It is possible to get Dundas Gauge to work in either. But the way you do it is completely different. Troy

Asp.net and Dundas webchartIs the issue with the time it takes to retrieve the data, or the time to populate the chart? Or are you getting the chart to retrieve the data directly (which would make it hard to see what part is taking up the time)? However, the best thing to do is send your inquiry into support@dundas.com , and give them more details about the situation (the size of the dataset, the type of chart, the method you are using to populate the chart, etc.) Troy

Dundas Diagram .NET - what is wrong?Tom, the email address attached to your codeproject account is invalid, therefore we have been unable to contact you directly in regards to your subscription, please send me an email with your current email address. Troy Marchand Dundas Software

Dundas Diagram .NET - what is wrong?Tom, I will talk with the group responsible for handling the MFC products you purchased, and see about getting you setup for a complementary support subscription. Troy

Dundas Diagram .NET - what is wrong?Tom, thanks for your quick and to-the-point response, it is appreciated. I will agree that our support systems were not as thorough several years ago as they are today. Since then we have made many changes within Dundas to ensure a higher quality product, support material (ie. documentation and samples), and customer support. The changes made were a major overhaul of how Dundas develops and maintains products; ensuring clients are highly satisfied and will remain satisfied for years to come. If you look at the quality of products and service that Dundas provides today you would be quite impressed. In fact many of the sales we make these days are based on the quality of our service (and product). It is true that bugs do happen from time to time, as this thread points out. However we do respond to them quickly and take them seriously. The issue in this thread has only been reported to us 3 times (out of thousands of evaluation installs) and all within the last week. At this point we have modified our installation procedures and are in the process of testing them before we release an update. If there is anything I can do to help change your opinion of our support (and product quality) please let me know. Troy Marchand Dundas Software

Dundas Diagram .NET - what is wrong?Tom, What issues are you having with a Dundas product? I’m sure that our support staff would be more than glad to help out. While reviewing our support and client databases, I did not find your name in the system. Were your inquiries made under a different name? Or sent to another department within Dundas? If so, please let me know, so that we may be able to track the issue(s) and see what happened. At Dundas we take great pride in our technical support, and receive many testimonials from our clients indicating so. We also follow up on each client on a regular basis to ensure there are no issues. If for some reason you have not received this level of support, I apologize, and I am more than glad to review the situation and ensure that everything is resolved to your satisfaction. Dundas Diagram .NET - what is wrong?Dundas takes the support of its products seriously, and will quickly answer via phone (416-467-9100) or email (support@dundas.com) any issues people are having with an evaluation version. The issue that you are having is a recently known (yet rare) issue. The product installation team, along with the Diagram team, are working on this issue as their top priority. We work hard to ensure a top quality product, and have many systems in place to ensure quality. However, due to its rare occurrence, this issue was not uncovered during our beta period. Now that we have seen a few occurrences of this issue, it has now being addressed as quickly as possible. I would like to apologize for the inconvenience that the installation procedure caused. Intellegence vs. MuscleYou are completely correct in your assumption. Your body is using up many nutrients that would otherwise be used by your brain. Ones eating habits must change to compensate for this change in lifestyle. (For details talk to someone else … it has been way too many years since I last looked into this in detail!) If you do so, you will find yourself way more energetic. There are also other factors in play as well, such as focus. If all you did was 'code' before and now you do two main 'intense' activities. Your thoughts will be less focused, since they will be split across the two. If you find yourself thinking about working out instead of optimizing a routine, then focus is your issue. This is quite common and has less to do with what type of activities you do, but how ‘intense’ these activities are (Just ask some game addicts what they dream/think about!!) As a 'retired' weightlifting competitor, I understand this way too well. Troy

Not complaining--Just curiousSorry for the late response to this.... Was a Dundas Chart the prize you won, or was it a replacement prize? In Chris's response posted above it seems that it was a replacement prize. Please email and let me know the details of this! If you are indeed owed a copy of the Dundas Chart I will ensure that you get your copy. Troy Marchand VP Product Development Dundas Software
