  • iterate through properties [modified]
    U ushering

Hey all, I was looking for a way to iterate through all properties for a given control, but am only finding ways to access individual properties. I am generating lists of all controls on a target form, but would also like to list all properties for each. Regards. -- modified at 18:48 Sunday 2nd September, 2007

  • GetLifetimeService() ?
    U ushering

I am using VS2005 object browser to explore unfamiliar concepts, but even after reading some help files I am still groggy on GetLifetimeService(). Can someone tell me when this would be used and to what end? I think I understand it in a web context but I am looking at the instance in MarshallByRefObject base of a Windows Forms dialog box component. Regards.

  • Amusing OSS response
    U ushering

I agree that it is rude, but I don't think the developers are out of line. One of the main reasons I am not heavily vested in OSS is that the culture around the products leaves much to be desired. There are plenty of examples of truly out of line behavior (google openBSD + Theo to get started), but this is not one of them. It is just an example of dealing with an immature community and recieving immature responses. OSS movements simply have a lot of growing up to do. Rude, yes. Logical, yes. My comment is not B.S., but I respect your right to differ. Regards. P.S. I respect and use Microsoft products. I see good things coming of the competition between the MS business model and the OSS movements when it finally develops.

  • Amusing OSS response
    U ushering

While not customer centric, this OSS developer attitude is logical. People who have longstanding issues are supposed to contribute in some way to fixing the problem. It is improper to continue hounding the core development team. The users concerned about this bug should have utilized the community to find an answer to their problem. Failing there they should have realized that the issue is not high on people's priority lists and tackled the issue themselves. Most OSS projects are not designed to compete on service. Considering the relative youth of most OSS projects it is actually beneficial to have people digging around in the guts of their programs trying to work out the kinks. I still code using MS products targeting MS platforms, but the excitement for me is in working with the ultra malleable (and yes, buggy) fringes of OSS development. Mainstream adoption of most (non-server related) OSS technology is years in the future and rightfully so... Right now the community is a developers playground. Regards.

  • Grades from Idiots
    U ushering

Maybe some of those people are like me... new to c#, needing some code to play with, don't know enough to determine if the code we are pulling deserves a 1 or a 5. I won't feel confident grading for at least another six months. And even then only on articles that cover ground I have worked with directly. In the meantime I may use some code posted on this board in adherence with the attached licenses. When I do start voting my scale will go something like this: 5 = Clear presentation of a technique I have worked with including optimization or restructuring that had not occured to me and/or applications of the technique that had not occurred to me. 3 = Decent presentation of a technique I have worked with... would have been helpful for me to read while I was learning that technique, but I did just as well without the article. 1 = Something I could implement or explain much better even though I am a c# noob. No Score = I am thouroughly unqualified to evaluate. I don't even feel qualified to comment on c# code yet. ANyone feel this is a bad approach? Regards, And thanks for the code.

Mr. Grand Negus, There is obviously some history between you and other members of this board... and I don't know anything about that. I just wanted to tell you in a non-insulting way that your posts can be annoying. This is not a personal attack, but I thought someone who is not involved with whatever has happened in the past should let you know. Every time I read one of your posts I can feel the fact that you are pushing an agenda. Automatically that tells me that your advice or insight is skewed, & that I will unlikely be able to have a productive exchange with you whenever we disagree on something. You see, you have an agenda and changing yor mind on a particular subject would force you to reconsider the foundations of that agenda, so it is not likely to happen. Anyhow, if you are truly looking for an exchange on the topics of AI or the future development of simulated intelligences try starting out a little differently. Maybe by discussing some news item that relates to the field. Then put something in your sig about the fact that there is a website related to yur own work in the field. I don't think that would constitute the 'advertising' that they try to keep out of this forum... Just a thought. Anyhow, good luck out there. Regards.

  • What do you do about flies ?
    U ushering

My little sister went to India with family friends who immigrated to America from a rural area in India. You are not allowed to kill spiders in their village or household for just this reason. I don't know how common this practice is, but after a few weeks my sister got used to the spiders (they were everywhere!) and gained a new respect for ecological solutions to pest problems. I do imagine, however, that widespread adoption of the spider tolerance stance is necessary to make this work. Regards.

  • Takes a Washin' and keeps on Workin'
    U ushering

I'm feeling inspired. *idea* A new t.v. show that combines guided meditation with tech reviews. The show will broadcast 40 relaxing, repetitive minutes of the wash going round and round. There will be soothing voice overs. Then some commercials. The last five minutes of program will be some techs trying to get the eq that just went through the wash to work. What do you all think? Should I perhaps refrain from posting on message boards after being up for 20 hours? Regards. -- modified at 5:54 Monday 7th May, 2007

  • where is the problem
    U ushering

I saw a guy use this technique back in high school when some guys were picking on him. Every time you see these people refuse to talk about anything but George Michael. Greet them by being droll and sarcastic... say something like, "Hey guys, guess what I am listening to. No REALLY! Guess. You're not going to believe this... but I am listening to George Michael." Be sure to do this moderately loudly so people around you notice. If the people who are bugging you try to change the subject say something like, "yeah, yeah, ok. But don't you guys think it is really funny that I listen to George Michael? I mean, can you really thnk of anything funnier than the fact that I like George Michael? I can't." Then walk away. DO this every time until they say enough already. It will be more embarassing for them than for you. Regards. P.S. to help avoid the George Michael stigma please refrain from wearing bright neon short-shorts... Or if you must wear them, please consider shaving your legs first. The hairy dudes in neon short-shorts is one fad that I hold Mr. Michael accountable for. *shudder*

And actually, many Mexicans are part European, which is also a big dividing line in Mexican culture. There are numerous distinct racial groups contained within the current boundaries of the country. As for the Iriquois part... Which tribe? Are you 'Cayuga,' 'Mohawk,' 'Oneida,' 'Onodaga,' 'Seneca,' or 'just made it up so I could support my arguement with nah nah nah nah?' Regards.

I was a little concerned about your earlier posts because of the blanket racial statements, but your comments about native South Dakota residents is reassuring about your acceptance of non-white people. I too have had many positive interactions with Native Americans, and I am glad the Natives of South Dakota provided you with positive social interactions. Regards.

Just so you know, many Mexicans are just as prejudiced as you are. I know, I have Mexican family members who come from the upper class. They say very hateful things about poor Mexicans and treat them horribly when they are forced to deal with them. That being said, I worked my way up from poverty on construction crews while learning how to code in my own time. I would trade the work ethic of most privileged people I work with now for the ethic of those poor Mexicans I came up with. As for telling you to shut up... Isn't that what you were doing to them? Different understandings of acceptable behavior breed situations like this. I guarantee you they weren't doing it just to make you mad. It probably didn't cross their minds that you cared. But there are plenty of better sites for you to post this message on. Google neo-con and you will be off and running. Regards.
