  • Batch scripting PrintUIEntry gotcha -- Digital Signature
    V Vraxx

Been poking around this issue for a few days, trying to see if anyone has a potential workaround. Have a few batch scripts to force updates of print drivers onto workstations. Was going just fine with WinXP boxes but I encountered a problem with Windows 2000 systems. rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /q /b "Test Printer" /if /f "generic.inf" /m "Generic Printer" Even if the driver I'm pointing to is WHQL certified and has a valid digital signature the Win2k boxes are prompting for the Yes/No confirmation to continue loading the driver. Seems to be similar folks with this issue but haven't seen a clean workaround yet. I'm not averse to trying to script this in VB.NET or C#.

  • Digital Cameras...
    V Vraxx

I'd have to agree that the camera fit to you is very subjective. For Point and Shoots if you're looking for something with a lot of zoom, I've enjoyed playing with the Canon S5 IS and the Panasonic TZ3. The TZ3 is a nice compact super zoom and the sport mode focuses fairly quickly. Not the most user friendly manual shot mode however. The Canon S5 has the extra benefit of allowing you to add on a shoe mounted flash if your shots are getting more complicated down the road. Focus speed is fairly quick but as mentioned in an early reply you could always switch to a priority mode and manually bring down the fstop. I haven't had a chance to use the equivalent Nikon gear so I can't speak on that subject.

I know what you mean :( I'm not a die hard programmer (more a sysad) but I do try and keep my questions to something pertinent and not something immediately found in a google search. Hopefully I haven't added to the chaff. It's hard sometimes to cut through the posts in the C# and SQL forums as they've become bloated with questions that sound more like homework assignments than actual questions. On the upside, I can least say that CP has less noise level thus far than some of the other tech forums out there

Hehe well yeah SLR photography can become a big monkeysink. In the end I chose going with canon since it suited my style more. But if you're looking to start out I'd echo the same sentiment as an earlier post. Try something like a Rebel XTi with a good lens 17-85 USM for instance. As your needs grow you can buy a larger lens like a 70-300 or 100-300mm

I'm way out of practice on my gear but here are shots from my EOS30 with a 28-200 USM Canon lens Car Photos I've also shot with older Nikon F90 (35mm) and the EOS 10D. In the end I find it's a question of what you shoot, and what feels comfortable for you UI wise. The Nikon controls to me were great for indoor, but I liked my Canon for outdoor and sport more.

Yeah but if you add more ZZ's the compiler should recognize that as a change in process priority :) or execution order.. Was having a crappy day, this made me laugh. Kudos :)

  • Top 10 dead or dying computer skills - moral of the story
    V Vraxx

Yeah i was a bit mixed on that too. I kinda see COBOL phasing out as the larger mainframe gear goes but C? I think it's got tread left. Maybe not for end-user application development but under the hood where the optimization counts totally. I was also confused by the idea that System Administrators are a dying breed. If anything I think the need for skilled admins is somewhat on the rise. The catch is they expect admins to do more with less given the supposed "improvements in server software". Oh well guess we'll see how it pans out.

    V Vraxx

What build are you trying to run it on? I know 5.5.x lacks any 2.0 support so it'll try to treat the device as a 1.1 Vista support as the host OS I think is limited to 6.0. I still have to install and test that... *hrm*

  • ping
    V Vraxx

Actually I think I can see what you're trying to get at. Are you referring to pinging both the public facing IP address and an Internal address say behind a firewall? Unless the router allows IP forwarding so that an external IP is mapped to one behind the firewall probably, then no you probably can't do both.

  • Programatic Removal of Network Printer in All Profiles on a Workstation
    V Vraxx

Hi Dave, Thanks for the clarification there. The issue I'm bumping into is that most of the tools which are using WMI/VBS to try and remove the driver on a per machine basis can't do so w/o removing the print defaults in each of the user profiles. The old "Driver in use" issue. So far though I haven't seen anything that would allow me to enumerate then remove the defaults per user profile.

Logitech Cordless Comfort Keyboard with a Logi G7 Laser Mouse (replaces the original mouse in the set) I had tried the MS ergonomic and used the really really old one for years. Last few versions the key feel was a little odd to me. Though part of me is still nostalgic for the good old IBM keyboards.

  • What language must a newbie choose?
    V Vraxx

Yeah at last someone who remembers good old lisp :P In fairness I'd agree with having him start with one or two academic langs just prior to C++ with C++ being the eventual goal. C# could be #2 on that list if only to be able to get nice tangible. Maybe Pascal or VBA as a light intro to program structure. Lisp for kicks so there's some exposure to a functional programing arch.

  • Programatic Removal of Network Printer in All Profiles on a Workstation
    V Vraxx

Hello to all. I've been staring at this administrative task for a while to try and help folks in helpdesk environments. I'm comfortable scripting vbs/wmi to do removal of specific network printers at login (using WMI RemovePrinterConnection), but for the life of me I've yet to see anything which can process it for all users on a particular station w/o having the user login. The only other option I've seen has been to blow away the user profile which is excessive. In particular I'm targeting older 2000 stations which are getting a lot of driver corruption. Any recommended tools or resources I can read on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    V Vraxx

I've occasionally had to swap power Supplies out after 2-3 years due to weird drops in voltage (usually on the +12V rail). If you've swapped out everything but RAM and PSU you may want to get a tester (some of the simples ones run only 20-30 bucks) Hope you can pin down the fail point.
