    I've got an extra copy of Professional ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback) by Matt Gibbs and Dan Wahlin Professional ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX[^] I've already got a copy of the book, so I thought I'd give out the second copy. Details: - Zero cost to you. - It's a single book, so please only respond if you're genuinely interested in the contents. - Preference to someone in (Midtown) Toronto - so I can just drop it in your mailbox (and not pay to mail it) - Second preference to someone in Canada (so mailing is fairly cheap) First person to email me their address gets the book. On your marks. Get set. Go... Warren

    The Lounge question

  • Bell Canada DSL users?
    W Warren Stevens

    Ravi, I'm using the Bell DSL, and I live in midtown (near Bayview/Eglinton). I just did a speed test: http://www.speedtest.net/result/173160623.png[^] 4280 kb/s download 673 kb/s upload I don't have any hard stats, but subjectively the speed always seems consistent, and that download speed is enough that I can download 300 MB+ files in a few minutes. Any more speed would be a waste for me, so I didn't go for Bell's fiber optic offer (IIRC it was about $90/month). The only service interruption I've had was when a squirrel chewed through the telephone line going across the back of our property. I can't really fault Bell for that, since the cable line is in the same location, so the same thing could have happened if I'd been on cable. I pay $45.95/month (Canadian $) which includes the model rental, but I get $5 off of that for a "bundle discount". (If applicable) you should also consider your TV and mobile-phone decisions and go with one company for all of them. You can usually get a decent discount that way (say $10 - $15 / month). Hope that helps... Warren

    Hey everyone. Microsoft Canada is running the "MSDN code awards", and I got into the top 5 in the individual category[^] :-D They don't link to it directly, but the nomination is for the code and article I posted here on CodeProject: Vista KTM: Transaction Management in Vista and Beyond ...[^] on how to best use the new transacted file/registry functions in the Vista kernel. The awards (and voting) are over here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/canada/codeawards5/ [^] (that's my ugly mug on the top-right) If you would be kind enough to throw a vote my way, I'd really appreciate it! :-> Thanks very much. That sounds like a risky thing to do. Unless something is seriously broken, I never play around with a Visual Studio install. I really thought that if there was a single complex (i.e. something that really pushes the boundaries of the system) application that should work on Vista, it should be Visual Studio (if they Visual Studio developers can't get it to play nice with UAC, then I doubt anyone else will have a hope). FWIW, I was at a .NET conference on the weekend (sponsored by Microsoft), and one of the main speakers (talking about WCF) suggested running VS2005 in Administrator mode.

    W Warren Stevens

    Indeed! I find it hard to believe that the UAC prompt (and the accompanying "eclipse" of the rest of the screen) actually made it off the drawing board. The usability is absolutely horrendous. I find most of the Apple advertisements smarmy, but the UAC one actually gave me a bit of a chuckle. I don't know for sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the designer of the UAC was the same creative genius that gave us Clippy. In fact, instead of the boring UAC dialog, I can almost picture that fool paper-clip popping up: "It looks like you're trying to run that "Visual Studio 2005" application that you run everyday at about this time of the morning. Would you like to continue?" (and then the paperclip's eyebrows do that Groucho Marx quick up-down maneuver) ;P Warren

  • word meaning: *-o-rama
    W Warren Stevens

    LiYS wrote:

    Can it be equally interpretted as "hack, oh my god!"?

    That's not what it means at all. The best way to think of it, is (sort-of) as an exclamation point (i.e. the "!" symbol), and it usually implies that a number of things have happened. When you say it, the "o" sound last a long time, and the "rama" is said quickly at the end ("ooooo rama!"). It's very much for informal speech only. Teenagers would know what you're talking about, but 50+ years olds might not (and don't use it during a job interview). For example: 1) If you saw a huge multi-car accident, you could say: "Crash-o-rama!" or "pile-up-o-rama!" 2) If you're doing some maintenance coding, and you see the original programmer left an ugly hack. If you, in turn, write a hack to get around a problem left behind by their hack, that would qualify as a "hack-o-rama". Hope that helps... Warren

    Nuclear is very expensive, but I think you've really underestimated the cost of hydro-electric in your mind (compared to coal for example). Just because all of the cost is up-front doesn't make it cheap. Go price a dam, and I'm sure you'll say "Damn! that's expensive". BUT, hydro's hardly worth discussing anyway. The main problem with hydro-electric, is that everything worth damming had been dammed. Unless you live in China, where it's okay to submerge entire cities when building your damn, there isn't much economically feasible hydro capacity left in the world.

  • When 1 != 1
    W Warren Stevens

    because the default type for the enum is signed, so one of the two bits is used for a sign, and AxisZ (which is 2) overflows the range (which is zero or one). Could be fixed by changing the 2 to a 3, or adding ": unsigned" to the end of the enum declaration (to specify the type of the enum). Out of curiosity, I'd like to know why you are using bit fields anyway. How little RAM does your target machine have, or how big is your data set?
