Martial Law is declared and the Constitution and Bill of Rights are suspended. All foreign bases are closed and troops withdrawn to restore order at home. The 'temporary' seizure of authority becomes established in a Military Junta with the Commander-in-Chief at its head. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are shredded. The USA becomes fascist, isolationist and protectionist. The dark shadow of the American Empire having dispersed, the rest of the world becomes democratic, friendly, free marketing. A Golden Age is initiated (a New World Order, if you must), excluding you know who. Conspiracy Theorists live happily ever after, all their dreams fulfilled. Well some of it is just down to good ol fashioned ignorance and certain levels of acceptance, i.e. if there'd been an actual martian landing but details were sparse, people would beless likely to endorse it. The thing about believing what happened and I can't believe I'm quoting CSI here is that the physical evidence doesn't lie. Interpretations might though through pure bullheadedness.
