Mike Gaskey wrote: I'm not sure whether or not you considered the fact that this poll is meaningless since roughly 40% of the population pay -0- income taxes and in fact a sizable number actually get a return ("earned income credit") in excess of what they've paid in, a handout. So why wouldn't we be just happier than pigs in sh*t when we answer a pollster? How does that translate to meaningless? Don't they get a vote? Isn't the fact that they don't pay income tax a very good indicator that those 40% aren't paying too much? John Carson

"To put those numbers in perspective, imagine that the head of a household with annual spending of $100,000 called everyone in the family together to deal with a $34,000 budget shortfall. How much would he or she announce that spending had to be cut? By $3 over the course of the year–approximately the cost of one latte at Starbucks. The other $33,997? We can put that on the family credit card and worry about it next year" There is one thing wrong with that extended metaphor. In truth "Dad" has decided not to put the shortfall on the family credit card, but on one he took out for his five and eight year olds. Nonetheless, I loved it. I especially love the amount of airtime these draconian measures will be given by the media. We are the walking dead looking towards the end of the world, and Jane Austen represents the futility of teaching “good manors” and class to a narcissistic walking dead world. Hmmm, I suppose that works too. Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

I had one very interesting conversation there, several actually but one that really stuck with me. It was with a woman around my age. She and her husband had met at a GM facility and married years ago. Both are now retired and living on a GM pension. Both were pissed about the GM bailout even though a GM failure could erase those pensions they felt the company should fail. I think that was telling, people willing to risk their financial security for their personal principles. Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.
