Why doesn't MS put their MS books online?

Christian Graus wrote: A book costs me a days wages Same here too. However, I try to make a case at times and get away with my company paying for them. I just ordered 9 .NET books with my company paying for all. Well, I am in a middle of a design of new products for my company and there is a need to support the .NET as early as possible and with the small programmers around, we need to use COM and .NET interop as much as possible to satisfy many platforms. Starving knowledge, I cried for books, justified them and got them ordered ;P even though I do not have the VS.NET :(( Best regards, Paul. CG I don't think you'd understand. These MS press books cost 3000-5000 bucks in Indian currency :-( I wish we had pirated books like we have pirated CDs here... I know it's bad and ethically wrong. Nish [BusterBoy] wrote: But the mother of a hungry crying baby is allowed the moral right to steal food for her baby not quite after current "civilized world" law. if you steal out of need, you did steal and break the law, get ready for jail. If you steal without need, it's a mental issue, which is to be resolved by a pychatrist. >> I wish we had pirated books like we have pirated CDs here... But how? The starving child mother hand-copying 100 pg / day like in an dark age monastery?

I think it's not fair that the MS developer books are used as a means of earning still more profit. I seriously believe that these books should be part of MSDN. Nish Bow wow wow, Yippee yo yippee yay, My miniputt high, Is now 30 yay.
There was a time, a long time ago, when Microsoft did include some books on the MSDN CD. Now we only seem to get a couple of chapters. A quote from the October 2002 MSDN We try to publish books in their entirety whenever possible. (You will find titles of complete books listed in the Books node in the Library table of contents.) However, because of publisher or author restrictions, we sometimes are able to publish only selected portions of books. In making our decision to publish a partial book, we follow two criteria: MSDN developers must read the book critically and give it a positive review, and then MSDN developers must determine that the portion of the book that we publish has value in and of itself, as stand-alone content. Michael :-)

Nish, you're too intelligent to make such a statement. M$ make money per book, but so do the authors - M$ work like any other publishing house AFAIK. It may seem fair that M$ make no money on their books, but people like Charles Petzhold and Jeffrey Richter rely on their sales as a source of income. No. Actually the largest exporters of software. It's probably because of all the technology parks in CORK LIMERICK and DUBLIN. Well. All Microsoft Localiastion is done in Dublin. so your talking about every MS product in 96 languages being released from their Dublin offices. and HEadway software as well. A loads others. Just because MS is well-off doesn't entitle others to enjoy their work for free. Linux stuff is free simply because it's the easiest way to generate and maintain interest for those products. Microsoft doesn't have to, so they don't. It's pretty easy really. -- Eric Move along, nothing to see here.

Interesting. So they also make packaging and shrink-wrap the stuff, right? Is there enough trees on the island to make all these cardboxes? :) Tomasz Sowinski -- http://www.shooltz.com
