I'm home sick today ( for the past two weeks my kids and other peoples kids have been vomiting in my house, the whole place smells of spew and I'm surprised it took me this long to get sick ), but by lucky co-incidence I bought a new book yesterday ( on XSLT ) AND I got my copy of VS.NET. So I start my .NET install, and it tells me I need W2000 SP2. I go to Microsoft to download it - I am getting 50 k per second. I'll have the 100 meg file in half an hour. Man, I love ADSL. I could use ADSL right now. I wanted to download Oracle Database so I could test it for a new job I might be doing soon. No words can describe how surprised I was to find out the lastest version was a 1.2GB download. I was going to settle for the older version - *only* 600MB. I wish the prices would finally go down. I'll probably get ADSL if I move south next year. Isaac Sasson, Small time programmer - complainer at large. Sonork ID 100.13704

Cable is better? It's cheaper than a decent DSL connection, but in what world is cable better? I've had both and as soon as enough people in your neighborhood catch on and get it too, you're left with an almost unusable connection at the prime times of the day. It got so bad where I lived during the day that dial-up was faster until about 3 in the morning. Plus I don't know of a single cable provider that allows you to run any servers on the cable connection. Most of them are blocking all pertinent ports. Go to a "geek" friendly DSL Provider like Speakeasy.net in the states and you not only have a quality of service agreement on your connection speed but also the ability to use your bandwidth for whatever purpose you desire. That includes running mail, ftp, web and dsn servers. Just my 2 cents! :)

The better I was referring to should actually be "faster", as Christians ADSL is capped at 512Kbps and my cable is uncapped speed. As I said in a post up there somewhere, he is allowed to download more though, so it is a trade off. I dont know about slowdown due to people in the street. From what I have read, the bandwidth in the street is more than capable of handling a fair few connections, and it would take an awful lot of people to make my 10Mbps link feel like dialup. In Australia, in recent times, cable has also been a lot more reliable, with dropouts plagueing the ADSL network. Also, Telstra, the national telecommunications carrier, which owns all of the telephone lines, has only just started offering reasonable wholesale prices so that competitors, like Netspace who Christian uses, can provide a competetive service. Also, as far as I know, I am allowed to run servers on my connection, as long as I dont use it for business (though the business plan is identical in every way) or for anything illegal. -- David Wengier Sonork ID: 100.14177 - Ch00k

I have ADSL through Bell Canada, my telephone company. I regularly get 120kb/sec, for about $40 a month Canadian. Schweeet! - Jason Do you have a Pulse? SonorkID: 100.611 Jason
