What would cause the US to collapse in future?

The political system remains, but the foundation of beliefs in personal freedoms and little-to-no government intervention in daily lives has been dying for the last 75 years. For some things, yes. But their offices moved out of CA and into AZ, NM, OR, and WA for the most part. And many of the companies that jumped headlong into outsourcing are now realizing that some things can't be outsourced well without a huge drop in quality. most of the furniture and textile manufacturing jobs left NC in the past decade, and it had nothing to do with the laws: it's all about cheap labor. and of course, it's not just NC. but we got lots of office jobs... for now. but there's no reason we should doubt that someday, some other country will figure out how to do those jobs at acceptable levels of quality. Those freedoms were long since abolished. Lincoln (and the sitting Congress at the time) set the table for that when he decided that states were not free to leave the "Union", and the slope has gotten progressively more slippery ever since. There are still a ton of those jobs in NC (and Southern VA as well). Businesses moving is not necessarily a problem as it can help improve efficiency. The mass exodus from CA was largely due to the fact that it is next to impossible to make money when you are based in CA due to taxes, and the propensity for being sued. My point on this section of the thread was that an earthquake on the San Andreas falt would not shake the semiconductor/electronic industry since they are no longer there anyway. I was introduced to Chai, like many in the USA, through Starbucks and its kin (actually a small town college coffee shop while working early AM shifts)... which is the best thing that can be said about it. Yeah. I see I got voted down a bit for that; I didn't say that with derogatory intentions, just so everyone knows. Running out of oil would be bad for the oil-driven West as well as the oil-driven economies of the Middle East.

I would not call 1945-Present "a long time". As far as I'm concerned the USofA is not so much an empire by intent, but a provincial society being sucked into the vacuum left by the death of the colonial powers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
