Rocky Moore posted this but it needs full exposure so everyone can stand back and understand exactly why Microsft have failed to capture our excitement: ComingZune - Microsoft's iPod killer[^] Don't try and be all crazy and out there and viral and totally cool and deep and intriguing. Because that is just so lame I can't believe it's actually there, live, on my screen. Maybe it's just me but when I look at iPod.com[^] I can see what it's about and get the feeling that it's kinda hip, plays music, and looks clean and easy to use. When I look at comingzune I feel strangely sad and depressed and never want to go back there or hear the word Zune again. Has it got something to do with being bullied? Or maybe it's for kids whose parents have gone through a divorce. Or maybe, just maybe, it's some poor flash designers flash-back about their poor rabbit Freckles who was run over by a car all those years ago and he never stopped blaming himself. Microsoft - PLEASE - make it go away. This is a new low for you.

    cheers, Chris Maunder

When introducing a brand name, the most important thing is to get people talking about it. This is the third discussion in only a few days about Zune and the weird website. Seems like the campaign is working quite well. Microsoft thanks you.

We are just making sure what NOT to buy. Bookmark thes3 posts, and dig them out when someone posts about his great new toy. Or maybe, Zune will be "no no, noone buys it, but the sales are skyrocketing" device.

I also think Zune is a crap name. Sounds nasal. Or if you have seen those crap Mazda adverts, zoom zoom. I want to hide behind a sofa and cringe.

Yeah, it was amazing that company the size of Microsoft would put out something so lame. Wonder if they just handed it off to a new recruit to do the site.. Guess it just goes to show that drug testing in job field does not work ;)

Is that really Microsoft? A whois lookup on the domain reveals it is a GoDaddy.com registered domain for Domains by Proxy. Not exactly what I'd expect from a Microsoft domain name lookup. [edit]And I don't see the Microsoft logo anywhere! And it doesn't require Windows Genuine Rabbit Advantage to run, either![/edit] Mike -- modified at 22:44 Monday 24th July, 2006

Exactly. Look at the "terms of use" it say: "COPYRIGHT NOTICE. Copyright © 2004 Microsoft Corporation, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, Washington 98052-6399 U.S.A. All rights reserved. " Note the 2004 ;)

I don't understand this. Why does microsoft need to create another mp3 player, can't they just concentrate on making things better? Let other make 'em. Is it only greed that drives them?

I can see it now. It'll require an overclocked dual-core Intel CPU, a minimum of 4G of RAM, and run a special version of Vista Premium Professional Server Bread-Browning Edition™. Toasting will be accomplished by laying the bread over the CPU's heat sink.

Of those they hit the crazy (as in nuts) and viral (as in infectious disease) quite well. Crazy as in fun, no and viral as in viral marketing, no. We've been sending it around the office. Quite funny hearing that creepy music playing from across a corrider and the "sounds of dead silence" from the watcher. And poor Brian, joining Microsoft soon and all. We worry for his sanity.

It's 04:00 26-07-2006, I finished work 2.5 hours ago and am sitting here cruising CodeProject instead placing my alcohol order and drinking Longnecks of Coopers Sparkling Ale. This made me laugh out loud. I only knew about the site cause someone else has poated about it at the top of the Lounge.

First impressions are the strongest. To me Microsoft has made a statement as to the "feel" of their product. And it feels allll bad.

But they aren't marketing a product yet, just a name. This is completely inconsequential and has served it's purpose of getting a name out. In the end, it will come down to whether they have a well designed, solid player and a service with an attractive price point (if they do offer to match iTunes lists AND have a good player, I think they'll do quite well.) On the other hand, Mac desktop sales are down and they have those really annoying commercials for them....
