I don't understand this. Why does microsoft need to create another mp3 player, can't they just concentrate on making things better? Let other make 'em. Is it only greed that drives them?

They're in the business of making money for their stockholders, just like most companies.

I can see it now. It'll require an overclocked dual-core Intel CPU, a minimum of 4G of RAM, and run a special version of Vista Premium Professional Server Bread-Browning Edition™. Toasting will be accomplished by laying the bread over the CPU's heat sink.

When introducing a brand name, the most important thing is to get people talking about it. This is the third discussion in only a few days about Zune and the weird website. Seems like the campaign is working quite well. Microsoft thanks you.

Rocky Moore posted this but it needs full exposure so everyone can stand back and understand exactly why Microsft have failed to capture our excitement: ComingZune - Microsoft's iPod killer[^] Don't try and be all crazy and out there and viral and totally cool and deep and intriguing. Because that is just so lame I can't believe it's actually there, live, on my screen. Maybe it's just me but when I look at iPod.com[^] I can see what it's about and get the feeling that it's kinda hip, plays music, and looks clean and easy to use. When I look at comingzune I feel strangely sad and depressed and never want to go back there or hear the word Zune again. Has it got something to do with being bullied? Or maybe it's for kids whose parents have gone through a divorce. Or maybe, just maybe, it's some poor flash designers flash-back about their poor rabbit Freckles who was run over by a car all those years ago and he never stopped blaming himself. Of those they hit the crazy (as in nuts) and viral (as in infectious disease) quite well. Crazy as in fun, no and viral as in viral marketing, no. We've been sending it around the office. Quite funny hearing that creepy music playing from across a corrider and the "sounds of dead silence" from the watcher. And poor Brian, joining Microsoft soon and all. We worry for his sanity.

It's 04:00 26-07-2006, I finished work 2.5 hours ago and am sitting here cruising CodeProject instead placing my alcohol order and drinking Longnecks of Coopers Sparkling Ale. This made me laugh out loud. I only knew about the site cause someone else has poated about it at the top of the Lounge.

But they aren't marketing a product yet, just a name. This is completely inconsequential and has served it's purpose of getting a name out. In the end, it will come down to whether they have a well designed, solid player and a service with an attractive price point (if they do offer to match iTunes lists AND have a good player, I think they'll do quite well.) On the other hand, Mac desktop sales are down and they have those really annoying commercials for them....

gonna put my neck out on the line here... but methinks this is all just one big dupe scheme [kinda hoping i'm wrong tho] designed to create conversation [amongst other subversive goals] because no one really wants to get on with real work  for example, google "Zune": not a single direct reference from Microsoft sure, there are a lot of references TO MS, but it's all one way traffic. even the more "official" looking mail and guardian blogs [and they're not alone]: "Microsoft has announced Zune via an article that you're not allowed to read because it's behind a paywall in Billboard magazine." Puhlease. the sorry stories from someone who read an article that was published secretly by somebody who overheard a conversation about a guy who knows someone who's working in microsoft [4 years ago. as a janitor] and this becomes instant fact? and then there's comingzune, zoneinfo, zuneinsider, zunescene; some dodgy and suspect registrations- not even going into the bunnies. and then search Microsoft.com for Zune [or comingzune] and mmm.. nada. Yeah, some blog references etc.. but nothing "official". It's a clever ploy indeed.. and fir shizzle, some spammer's just legally obtained N email addresses... just maybe? ;) and either way, and a very interesting social psychology paper. and then to defend it all with some catchy phrases like viral marketing and new approach etc... etc... maybe i'm just hostile to "weird" advertising: check, all advertising. but all the cross-references just don't add up... or probably my research methods fail me- somebody got any more "conclusive" evidence?? *** DISCLAIMER: for the too serious.. the following is not for real *** btw: did u hear, codeproject just announced [can't give u the url [yet] becos it's NSA confidential] that they've just released a new algorithm to compete with RSA? of course, codeproject are bound to deny this rumour by agreement with NSA. but pretty exciting, heh? too true. and you won't believe who told me... ;P *** END of not real story ***

I think im going to be sick. I think Microsoft should hire some computer experts to help them out. If things dont change then the leadin OS will

Microsoft - PLEASE - make it go away. This is a new low for you.

                                        cheers, Chris Maunder
