Congratulations, Rob! May you always remember the feelings you had today, and continue to exercise the responsibilities as well as the rights that citizenship provides with the same grace, calm and reason that you clearly are showing here today. Regards - Trish

Having US citizenship makes it easy to travel/work around the world. That's a good enough reason for people to try and get a US citizenship :-)

I mean no offense, but why would you want, or need, to be a US Citizen? As one myself, I'm ashamed of this country and the way we (in general) treat the rest of the world. BTW, I've spent about 10 years in the past living outside the US so I think I have a somewhat outsider's viewpoint.

Makes it easier to travel around the world, specially Europe (no Visa hassles).

Then perhaps you should consider taking up citizenship elsewhere. There are no perfect nations.

Then explain to me how my comments, by starting with I mean no offense, are rude, and why my opinion should be in the soap-box while yours, calling me rude and ignorant, are worthy of the lounge.
only two letters away from being an asset
1. Your comments express a political opinion about the quality of this country, one which is contentious, and certainly not held by many others. As such, it belongs in the Soapbox. 2. Introducing your remarks with an appology (" I mean no offense") clear shows you knew many might well take offense, but felt your words were too important to remain unsaid. 3. If not rude, at least quite inappropriate. Tantamount to calling Rob M. an idiot for actually choosing to become a citizen. 4. If you don't like things as they are, get out and do something about it. Don't just sit around and whine; doing so just makes you part of the problem, not of the solution.

Rubbish. Where was his personal attack on you? He said that he was ashamed of his country and the way that it has treated the rest of the world i.e. it's simply his opinion which he is both entitled to and free to state. Now, if you take it as a personal insult that somebody could possibly think that there is anything bad about your country, that's really your problem. His post simply stated his opinion, with no intent to offend (as opposed to yours).

And my objections are to the inapropriate place and time for thos comments, not their content. As you say he is entitled to his "the glass is half empty" opinions, but it is not appropriate to express them in response to a post celebrating becomming a citizen of that country. Even if introduced by a disclaimer, his comments are tantamount to telling Rob M. he thinks he's a fool for choosing to do so. At best a wet blanket, at worst an insult.

I am glad everyone in the US is not like you.
I'm glad everyone in the US isn't like you. In fact I'm glad I have never actually met an American like you.

No, I asked why he chose to become a citizen, not why he wanted to live here. He was already living here.

Again, where was the insult? I only said I was ashamed of the way the US treats others in the world. Why is my shame insulting to you?

I don't care for you smart ass remarks.
Yes, the King of England didn't care for the remarks of Jefferson, Franklin, Paine, and others, but the Declaration of Independence was signed anyway and you can see where that lead.

Just to be pedantic. At that point in history there was no King of England. There has never been a monarch of England since the 1st May, 1707.

As does EU citizenship. I would think that EU citizenship would be easier on travelling than US citizenship. At least we can go to Cuba if we want to.

What you talking 'bout? There ain't no aliens here in Arizona. :) Congratulations on becoming a citizen. It's wonderful to be part of one of the greatest nations on the planet. It's also nice to know you're planning to vote. Now we can blame you for our elected officials. :)
