I mean no offense, but why would you want, or need, to be a US Citizen? As one myself, I'm ashamed of this country and the way we (in general) treat the rest of the world. BTW, I've spent about 10 years in the past living outside the US so I think I have a somewhat outsider's viewpoint.

Then perhaps you should consider taking up citizenship elsewhere. There are no perfect nations.

Having US citizenship makes it easy to travel/work around the world. That's a good enough reason for people to try and get a US citizenship :-)

1. Your comments express a political opinion about the quality of this country, one which is contentious, and certainly not held by many others. As such, it belongs in the Soapbox. 2. Introducing your remarks with an appology (" I mean no offense") clear shows you knew many might well take offense, but felt your words were too important to remain unsaid. 3. If not rude, at least quite inappropriate. Tantamount to calling Rob M. an idiot for actually choosing to become a citizen. 4. If you don't like things as they are, get out and do something about it. Don't just sit around and whine; doing so just makes you part of the problem, not of the solution.

And my objections are to the inapropriate place and time for thos comments, not their content. As you say he is entitled to his "the glass is half empty" opinions, but it is not appropriate to express them in response to a post celebrating becomming a citizen of that country. Even if introduced by a disclaimer, his comments are tantamount to telling Rob M. he thinks he's a fool for choosing to do so. At best a wet blanket, at worst an insult.
