#1 in my book: Whenever possible, it should be pronounced with a soft southern drawl, as though by a young blond belle standing on a plantation house veranda (holding an ornate fan): "sī'ns" / "sä'ns". Gotta keep it respectable, ya know?

I haven't read the link yet, but I think it's very difficult to pick one thing. Discovery did this series with Bill Nye the Science Guy of the Top 100 Discoveries in several fields including biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, etc. Then they did a top 10 from the different shows. if i had to narrow it to one thing, I would say Genetics. It's a broad topic but there is so much about it that is fascinating.

Well thankfully the question was interpreted not as "what one field" but as "one underpinning of science in general" so most of the answers are along the lines of finding the truth, knowing that ultimately there is more, that hard graft is the basis, curiosity is important, that anyone can try and so on.

Actually, there's a lot of science surrounding cooking. For example: Did you know that the gluten in cornflower cause liquid to bind, because molecules get stuck in the long strings formed by the gluten molecules? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten[^] There's a program on discovery science that shows a lot of interesting stuff about cooking.

That's a very interesting question, in what would constitute "conclusive". But for now, I'll sit back and enjoy watching science figure out things like dark matter and dark energy. :) Marc

No. People's capacity for self delusion is unlimited. No matter what is discovered, there will be people that won't believe it. This is why there are people who believe that UFOs are regularly visiting Earth just to mess with hicks, that the US never went to the moon and that they are the next American Idol, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Are you being genuine or are you hinting that science is on a wild goose chase and the answer is God? I didn't take you for the type who thinks God micromanages the universe. I took you more for the type that thinks God create the universe and its rules and then let it run. In the latter dark matter and dark energy may exist and be found by science. In the former, not.
