So, I open up a folder on the Vista box, right click on a subfolder and select "copy" I open another folder on a different machine. Right click. Paste is gray. Repeat. Same result. Repeat. Same result. Hmmm, but I can drag and drop between the two folders without any problem. Is there some reason I should continue using this OS, when basic copy and paste folders doesn't even work? Nope. I've stopped using it myself and I am happier for it. Using it just felt like I was ice skating uphill. Sure, it has all of the nice shinny things, but logo certified drivers are crap and some of my favorite utilities don't work or are hobbled. My days are too short to have to deal with it.

Reading your and Chris' posts, I suddenly had this 'vision' of a fish swimming through the Ocean when he suddenly sees this bright, shiny lure in front of him. The fish thinks "WOW" ... gotta get me that ... and grabs it. In an instance, he's hooked, and being dragged through the water ... unable to stop, unable to get himself off the hook. His world is now a blur. Everything he knew and loved is being left behind, as he is yanked up out of the ocean. Choking. Can't breath ... all the while wondering why the heck he didn't just stay away from the lure to begin with ... Then, without warning, he is beheaded ... disemboweled ... and his lifeless body is then cast to the ground with millions of other fish that made the same mistake. THAT, is the real "Vista" Experience. :-> Now, if you'll all excuse me, I have to go flop around some more...

I can understand that. There was no hourglass. The Paste menu, when right-clicking on the destination, was simply gray. Both drives were spun up and I could navigate without delays (this is on an intranet, both boxes sitting on my desk). Marc

Sounds to me like you used the CTRL+C and then paste option. MS seems to ignore the CTRL+C sometimes even with XP. Its really annoying, but one has to deal with it. I have taken to using the menus or pressing CTRL+C multiple times. This may not help you and your situation, but it doesn't seem like it would hurt it either. Phil

I think this falls under user error. Did you check to see if you had write permissions to the folder. I have never had a issue with copy and paste in vista

This has something to do with the driver. It has nothing to do with vista. The drivers for vista suck right now.. That is a very big part of the issue

The explorer in Vista is beyond crap. :( So is the control panel and almost every other configuration dialog (except the old ones). I'm beginning to wonder what the hell Microsoft was thinking. I mean.. it is crap! It doesn't matter much how well the kernel guys did their jobs - the UI is horrible, horrible, horrible!!!

The issue is that this happens with supposedly certified drivers. Driver certification has become meaningless in the vista era. For as long as vista was in the works, it a crying shame that MS and the vendors didn't do a better job.

a slider is the wrong control for picking one item from a small list of items.

You are suppose to say "WOW" if anything like this happens because the "WOW starts NOW (Oy, That Pun Hurts) the moment you start using VISTA"

The issue is that this happens with supposedly certified drivers. Driver certification has become meaningless in the vista era. For as long as vista was in the works, it a crying shame that MS and the vendors didn't do a better job.

Insert long and highly detailed post from Jeffry Brickley about how people like him convinced MS to change the driver model at the last minute to allow native OGL support largely forcing nVidia and ATI to restart from scratch with their development here. Blame him, not MS.

I wish Microsoft had followed the *nix paradigm and provided the kernel and the UI as two separate pieces. Besides, that would allow others to compete for the UI development. Marc
