Degree?

I happen to have a degree (Information Technology Engineering) since today. Just returned from university where I discussed my final project.

Congrats, I hope you're lined up for a well paid and fulfilling job, perhaps even one that uses what you learned in the degree. Even more so I hope you had as much fun getting one as I did ;)

Why would I ever take a degree if not for the appearance? :-D

From what I've seen, a degree is simply a statement that the person has had exposure to a certain minimum background. Note the word 'exposure'; it doesn't say anything about how much they gained by it. A lot of self-taught programmers (in other words, non-degreed) tend to be of the 'every problem is a nail, and I've got this nifty hammer' variety. I've worked with my share of them. Some are flexible, some not. A degree is not a guarantee of competence or ability. Neither is any amount of experience. The only proof is to get the person in place, and see what they can do.

Congratulations Dario ! :jig: and  or :java: I had some troubles with the head department of my schools, so I did not go to the ceremony when diplomas were handed out (even if I graduated with the best notes in my option and should have got some special price). It was sad to end up 20 years in school that way (even if I could not help it that these guys were morons), so enjoy the moment !

Welcome to the club! (I'm in the CS dept.) What degree did you acquire? Bachelor's, Master's, PhD?

I agree with you 99% percent. A degree shows that you have at least dedicated yourself to finish a long term task (at least 3 years, depending a little on how much minor subjects you have to study). That's a little bit more than just background. If I was hiring, I would also make sure that the person in question has had some experience with a wide variety of technologies, and not just the latest buzzwords found on MSDN's front page.

Actually, I don't know which is the "international" definition. I think it's Bachelor's (3 years, right?). Maybe you can help me. :)

Well, I studied both in France and Germany, and during the exchange year when I was in Germany, people from my school literally "dropped" us in Germany with no assistance. No mail to ask how things were going. Nothing during 8 months, but for getting the cash to pay the school. So I told them about how crappy the organization were, and they did not really like it.

Yes, in the form of analog and digital electronics, signal processing and logical (binary) networks design. I almost never touched a physical device, though...

European Bachelor's are often 3 years, IIRC. American Bachelor's are 4 years if I recall correctly, due to required minor subjects. So, how does it feel to be free? :-D I got a job right before the dot com bubble burst, and got back to the university when it burst. I got hired as a teacher, and studied for my master's as a went along. Took me 2 years to finish that last fourth year. On the other hand, I got full pay, so I'm not complaining. And when I got "back out in the wild", I had a "real" job waiting for me.
