I've noticed that in the Salt Lake City area there has been an over all decline in salaries while at the same time there has been a marked increase in skill set requirements. Is it a trend? Maybe. It could also be an anomaly and will correct itself shortly when those positions remain unfilled.

Agreed. I think it's fun from time to time to mock, berate, gasp at the hubris of some of these HR folks willingness to offer monetary scraps for a skill-set that may have taken years to build.

I'm yet to see a job offering in India where the employer pays in USD.

You've probably not done much contract work then. In my experience and those of people I know, I've never seen any contract work offered in INR terms (though in pretty much every instance, the client was located abroad - not necessarily in the States).

I've never worked for a big employer - it's probably something I may never experience in my career. Not that I mind much now, but it may have helped me earlier on in my career - specially all the politics and social differences of working for a massive company.

Our sysadmin was complaining about this last week. Companies are looking for super admins, but aren't willing to pay the big bucks for qualified people. Just being capable with Active Directory is worth $20 an hour.

Yes. It's happening in the UK as well. The type of rate/skill set in your original post is occasionally seen in UK job boards too.

I think Nish's point was perfectly valid and reasonable. You didn't include any details so it's anyone's guess where this is or what it pertains to. He's quite right though: if you can't think outside the U.S., think of it in U.S. terms, pick a tiny, poor town in a poor state and think about how much they are paying an in-house computer tech at a starting level wage.

This highly depends on location and how long you have been out of work. If the job was in my area and the person was out of work for long enough I can see them taking this $20/hr job being that this is not a horrible salary in Pittsburgh, PA. Although I agree anyone with these qualifications has to be desperate to accept that.

If I take the calculation from Nish, ~44 000 $ ~ 34000€, that is a very common salary for someone in the IT in France. I have a lot of friends who do not even earn that. I've recently tried to move jobs in France, 5 years experienced programmer, for a project leading, I was offered 32 000€ a year.
