What is ALT.NET
-
I've recently seen references to ALT.NET and I've searched for the term but I get a bunch of links that don't really tell me much. Does anyone know what ALT.NET is?

It's basically .net devs who adopt community standards and approaches as opposed to those espoused by ms/msdn.
My Blog A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. What a way to introduce yourself to the community. I cannot image a better way than insulting members and yelling.

Good to know, I'll have to make sure not to fall into the black hole.

Generally speaking, when someone posts something like that, it's best to assume it's a troll, it almost certainly is.

I see. I am pretty new around here, and to forums in general. I'm not the greatest at spotting a troll, but I bet I can do it a little better now. What's the policy on dealing with trolls, just ignoring them?

I was assuming so with the name being used.

When lost, try "dot" for . As in: http://altdotnet.org/[^] We are a self-organizing, ad-hoc community of developers bound by a desire to improve ourselves, challenge assumptions, and help each other pursue excellence in the practice of software development. Our movement is new. The conversation just started. All are welcome to shape and form the dialog in blogs and lists and face-to-face gatherings both local and global. Does that tell you more than you already knew? It certainly doesn't tell me much, other than that Chris Austin seems to have hit the nail on the head. :) [edit] However, go to that URL above. There's links to a wiki, blogs, etc., that you can peruse and still walk away wondering what the heck ALT.NET actually is. [/edit] Marc

Here is a writeup on ALT.NET: http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2007/05/02/are-you-alt-net.aspx[^] Going by the weblog contents, this word is coined by David Laribee.

ALT.NET is a emerging software development movment; Members of this movement try to get out of "mainstream" .NET and Microsoft developers and use ALTernative (origin of ALT, I guess) ways of doing things. For example they may use NHibernate technology instead of using usual .NET data access components like datasets. Although it seems to be, but ALT.NET is not another Anti-Microsoft movement; ALT.NET developers just doen't limit themselves to "usual" .NET tools and SDKs which came from Microsoft, instead they try to keep their minds open and look for new technologies and practices in order to get the best out of their effort.

That's probably what most of good developers do, in my opinion.

Absolutely - I look at whats out there and pick up tools and frameworks that could be useful to me. It seems that I practice, to some extent, ALT.NET and never knew it. Thanks everyone for helping me find out what ALT.NET is.

How do you do this? I don't see a button or a link, or is it just simple voting 1 to 5 the offending post.

The same principle applies to Design Patterns, you'd be surprised how many good developers are actually using design patterns without knowing it.
