Hi I need some advice to get to a decision: I work now as a C# developer in a middle size (~300 people) company. Now there are two open jobs available: - C# Software Developer and Team Leader - Project Manager What are the questions I should ask myself to get some information, which of these 2 jobs is the right one or should I keep my current one? Thanks for your input Roland

as a project manager you probably won't be coding any more; you'll be managing timelines and schedules and sitting in meetings all day. is that what you want ?

As a Project Manager I won't be coding any more, only maybe in some special situations.

What do you want to do with your life? seriously. Think on it. Do you want to "lead" do you want people asking you questions thinking you know the answers to everything? do you want the responsibility? Do you want to do the same thing forver? do you want to have to hire and fire people? (people often think of the former, never the latter, can you do it? if someone is thoroughly screwing up, can you fire them?) What do your performance reviews say about your people skills? do you agree with it? Get a full list of the duties of each position, or talk to the last person in them. Can you do it? no, seriously, don't fudge your answer with "I think so" or "I'll try" there is only do, and do not. Can you do the job?

If you have to ask us rather than just ask for questions, I would say your indecision will keep you in your current job. I held a manager's position when I was young, early 20's, for all of several months. I had to hire my replacement as a programmer, and fire him, and went back to the job as a programmer. I said I would never take a management position. I am team-lead, senior developer, though no project lead, and now outside of work I run my own company. Things change, never is a very long time, things definitely change. You are the only person who can answer the questions, but you have to answer them truthfully and without hesitation. If you are unsure because you don't know what the job entails, find out what the job entails!

Will my company out-source developement in the next 2 years? Am I willing to go for PMI certification? Project Management is under upward price pressure, development is under downward price pressure, which is better?

You might want to ask yourself some of the following: Why am I programming? What do I want out of a programming career, if anything? Is there something else I'd rather be doing? Are my concerns primarily financial? Doh! Looks like El Corazon beat me to it! :)

Many years ago I was given a piece of advice - and it was the best piece of advice ever. Basically it goes "Don't give advice to others. They know what they want to do and they only want confirmation". So do what you want.

I don't want to seem like I'm being a copy cat ;) Don't worry, the way I have it figured, I should have a sig worthy (great sig too) quote within 17 hours, 11 minutes and ... 12 seconds  I have all the faith in you Pete :D

Team leader = you have to know your stuff, plus schedule work and motivate a team. ¨ Project manager = crap. OK, just my opinion, I like tech jobs, hands on stuff.

Hmmm. For some reason the phrase "I'm Canadian, that's American Lite" comes to mind.
