Need some Advice for Job decision

Many years ago I was given a piece of advice - and it was the best piece of advice ever. Basically it goes "Don't give advice to others. They know what they want to do and they only want confirmation". So do what you want.

Hi I need some advice to get to a decision: I work now as a C# developer in a middle size (~300 people) company. Now there are two open jobs available: - C# Software Developer and Team Leader - Project Manager What are the questions I should ask myself to get some information, which of these 2 jobs is the right one or should I keep my current one? Team Leader is always better than a Project Manager. Project Manager is what you call them that doesn't know anything. jhaga

What do you want to do with your life? seriously. Think on it. Do you want to "lead" do you want people asking you questions thinking you know the answers to everything? do you want the responsibility? If you have to ask us rather than just ask for questions, I would say your indecision will keep you in your current job. I held a manager's position when I was young, early 20's, for all of several months. I had to hire my replacement as a programmer, and fire him, and went back to the job as a programmer. I said I would never take a management position. I am team-lead, senior developer, though no project lead, and now outside of work I run my own company. Things change, never is a very long time, things definitely change. You are the only person who can answer the questions, but you have to answer them truthfully and without hesitation. If you are unsure because you don't know what the job entails, find out what the job entails!

Been there, done that , got the .... You just described my situation perfectly except I am a contractor in a niche where the boss appreciates me. I got sick of chasing invoices and selling all the time so I retired to contracting and have never been happier. The longest job I have EVER had in 3 decades of work is my current contract.

I'm in Arizona, but the local arboretum has its annual Australia Day, under the eucalyptus trees, with a storyteller/musician to pass along some of the culture. (I took the didgeridoo class last year.) Anyway... Before he began his spiel on Saturday there was an announcement that a car with Ontario plates was blocking another car. The storyteller (Paul Taylor) said jokingly, "those bloody Canadians".

Team leader = you have to know your stuff, plus schedule work and motivate a team. ¨ Project manager = crap. OK, just my opinion, I like tech jobs, hands on stuff.

True. The team leader or a technical lead (as it is called in India) acts as a fine glue and a sacred bridge between all the programmers/coders/developers and all tiers of managements like middle management/top management/project manager. At least from India, the role of project manager is to always stick his a** glued to the seat, causing a faster wear and tear of the costly chair, wasting the organizational resources on lengthier long distance calls purportedly to maximise organizational profits but just wasting everyone's time and energy.

That's pretty funny :) But doesn't it get better over time? Isn't that part of the "learning" or break-in period? Or is that just a lot of hype, i.e. that the Dragon system "learns" or gets better over time as it adjusts to your vocal patterns?

Well, yes, kind of, in my experience, you could "train" it. Every time it does something wrong, you correct it. If you correct using voice, it learns. "Delete that" was being used all too often. If you correct via retyping, it didn't relearn, which is what you do after 3 or 4 "delete that's" in a row. One neat feature is you could totally replace a word or phrase. For instance, you could train it that when you said "dumb jerk" it could type "Gary" instead. ;) It appears some people have had better luck than I, specifically El Corazon [Documenting by voice], which is one of the tasks I used it for. My vote is it sucks at that task, however. Being mid-West, my English isn't all that bad. Ohio doesn't have the Milwaukee twang or the Kentucky drawl. Just a few yuns, y'alls and you-guys to contend with. :laugh: I think the tendency was that I started talking strange, rather than it learning from me. FYI, later I purchased and tested some IBM ASR embedded software and it worked perfectly in an environment with industrial noise in the background. The vocabulary was very limited, as I needed it, but it had 100% perfect recognition nonetheless.

I think one of the biggest problems is the fact that many people use it in "basic" mode. I picked up dragon-preferred, the higher costing (but not highest) because of a couple of features. What is being referred to above is the context related pronunciation, though I have never seen it that bad, though I did just start using it yesterday morning full-out. For instance, my use of Topo orientation gets translated to "Topol orientaton" because it doesn't recognize the Topo as it is not a word, but an abbreviation for Topographic. Dragon preferred loves tech-speak, after training, but hates abbreviations. If you have written any documents, you can train dragon-preferred on startup using those documents. It uses the words as common usage counts to create context association. For instance "topographic engineering" occurs frequently together so has a high context association. But "topol graphic engine earing" has zero context association in my documentaton. Thus after dragon read every single paper I have ever written it knows I deal with engineering words rather than engine earing. Most people don't take the time to train any voice tool, they want to use it, and use it now. Even I skipped out of more than the basic training (first training lessons in both context, my writings, and the first voice lesson). I figured that was all that was needed to start it off, where I noticed it has problems understanding me, I can teach it specific lessons. So far this has worked exceptionally well. However, since I do give presentations, I have learned to speak distinctly and relatively smoothly with very few extra inflections to the words so as not to change the meanings unexpectedly. That minimal training took all of 10 minutes and was worth the time. Of course I do have a dual/dual processor in this machine so the reading of my documents was over in 5 minutes, but they warn may take as long as 30 minutes. Even so, grab a coffee, the context association counts are worth it. Of course the first lesson in voice training to dragon preferred explains all of this to you, you are actually reading the documentation that explains why you are training the computer and what benefits you will get out of it. Pretty smart if you ask me. But most p
