The standalone version is internationalized, which means it includes 30+ languages of bloat. The windows update smart download will be substantially smaller.

It's like SQL and VS SP. It is about the same size as the product itself. Where's that dependancy hell fix-up they promised? Oh, it is no longer in binary space, but in bloat compatability (that's got to be topping the all time high). Sure, an advance over fragility, but at that cost you have to be wondering where did all the modularity vanish.

AFAIK, they realized at some point that, while clever and efficient in the most common cases, "patches" - that is, sending only compressed binary diffs of only the files that should have changed - would break horribly on edge cases where earlier patches or hot-fixes had already been applied, or optional features had been left uninstalled, or... So now it's brute-force all the way. Bandwidth is cheap, right? :-\

Ok, this is fist time I am hearing it vaguely confirmed..thanks Shog. So they dumped the patch method? I guess it tallies with my experience that Vista was pretty much clueless on the order of updates for over a year. In fact it was getting consistently confused on the update process. And surely, by the statistics they collect on all known to mankind software installs and log upstreams to their servers, they should be able to figure out 'earlier' vs 'later'. Those DBs must be massive, and we all fill them up ;-) Yeah I'd say bandwidth is getting cheap (only a few countries in Europe really lead the way, France being one), but at what cost (privacy, government involvment in ISP laws, etc.)

There's no final SP release yet. That link points to an OEM website and the download isn't available, and no word of release from official MS sites.

Yes; once Microsoft gets the SP1 driver problems fixed, you should have no problems. Let's see now, 8" floppies, that'll be like, 900,000+ of those, with a gross weight of like 1.4 tons, stuffed into about 423,000 boxes, using 120,000 yards of bubble wrap (non-static kind, of course), shipped via UPS nextday air . . . So ... that'll be like, 2.53 million in shipping and handling charges. Shog, we're gonna need a valid Credit Card number please, and a doctor's note that says your not completely insane. Oh wait, you're running Vista ... ok, never mind on that doctor's note thing ... just the CC number ... and 12 forms of I.D. :rolleyes:
