I read an interesting point in Bill Gates' usability email[^] (from the Insider.)

The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes.

I hadn't thought of it until now but a few years ago it took hours to download an application and at most 30 minutes to install the app. I used to often leave downloads overnight, ready to install in the morning. These days I can get 500mb in a couple of minutes. Installers however have only got slower. Adobe CS3 takes about an hour to install properly. The download takes 15 minutes. Weird.

Vista takes half that time to install... I suspect its all due to that COM crap they invented.

Everything with the word Adobe in it just completely and utterly sucks. Save yourself the wasted time and don't even bother with the download. Try some of these[^]. Acrobat reader in particular. It takes hours to load a simple pdf, every time you open it you get prompted with their stupid ugly update manager thingy... "please update to version 8.0001512.21223521.312001001105401.123"... When All I wanted to do was read a pdf!

Thanks Simon, tried them all and I think Photoshop is still the best for photo work. I also like Macromedia Adobe Fireworks. I am a bit odd in that regard, so few other people like it.

It gets better when you switch to Windows Classic scheme and replace the installation with Windows Server 2008

The CS3 installer has to be the worst I've seen yet. If I remember correctly it took a few hours to install the entire master collection and it didn't even do that properly! I have difficulty understanding why CS3 is so much slower than CS2, other than possibly something to do with Adobe & Macromedia merging thier product suites?!.

Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. Hear Hear!

heh. Actually, CS3 fails to install (after an hour of churning) if you have a previous version of CS3 installed, a beta or trial version for instance. Very, very frustrating. (And I make do with an 80gb HD. I don't like having anymore, it just encourages waste.)

IIRC, i can download a new copy of Illustrator faster than i can get my existing copy to start up.

Yeah, unfortunately, I suspect your probably right. I don't do anything serious, so I get by with paint.net for the most part. I have heard that photoshop simply is required for serious photo editing.

Interesting, so maybe I should be blaming windows for my pdf woes. (I have now switched to foxit[^] which is much lighter, but wouldn't compete with your mac by any means.

Ah no, blame Adobe. The Adobe Reader app. is slow on Mac OS X too. But Mac OS X has built-in PDF viewing so it is unfairly fast. Technically Windows could do it too but I imagine Adobe would sue Microsoft or something equally pathetic. FoxIt is your best bet on Windows. If you use Firefox 3 then this extension[^] is pretty handy too.

I was pleasantly suprised with the Vista install. A shame everything after the install is so poor.

:~ What exactly? Vista is the second best desktop OS I have tried (the best one is Windows Server 2008 with some tweaks :) )

Aero, UAC, rough edges, inconsistencies, change-for-change-sake and no command-line improvements. I've gone back to Windows XP when I need Windows.

Ah yeah, I do pay at home but it is pretty darned cheap (€40 for 6mb/s.)
