Yea noticed it this morning, it's been "slashdotted" for a little while today too. So... it indexes many more pages than Google, great... now how about you make the results relevant, and the images match up...

You beat me to it. My first test is usually to search myself. I must say, I'm impressed by the format.

Rubbish. My test search: "MSDN console writeline" Google - 614,000 results. First one is the MSDN page for the system.console.writeline method. Cuil - We didn’t find any results for “MSDN console writeline”!! :wtf: Seriously! None! Nothing! Not a single mention of any of those words on all 121,617,892,992 pages! They are clearly indexing 121,617,892,992 pages I care nothing about. [Edit: Then: "We’ll be back soon... Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity. Thanks for your patience." - Well don't spend too much on those servers, as we'll be gone soon  ]

And our survey says 'whaaaah waaaaah' when it comes to technical material. Try searching for linq datacontext. The columns aren't very usable as you can't just read down the page. You can try to read across, but the results aren't tabular, so they're not quite lined up in rows. The categories box fools the eye into thinking the third column is a load of Google adverts too!

First impressions are negative, and most are covered already by previous posters. 1. Black page? I strongly suspect there were teenagers involved in design. 2. Searched for "wd10eacs 00D6B0", 0 results returned, whereas with google I get one or two relevant links. 3. No "cached" version of the search result. 4. Awkward results layout which is hard to scan quickly. 5. Plain Jane. No shopping, maps, news, finance functionality. So far I'm not impressed.

Now, along with her husband, Tom Costello, and a few other Google alumni, she is trying to upstage her former employer. Man, I think that's the dumbest thing to do--go into competition with your former employer. Even if you think your non-compete (and so forth) agreement has expired, you're still setting yourself up to be killed just on the cost of fighting the lawsuit, regardless if you win in the end. My co-worker and I were discussing it this morning. I tried a few searches, and I hope they're not considering themselves ready for prime-time. Several simple searches returned no hits, whereas thousands were returned by other search tools. Also, it was weird - a couple would be returned on the first page, then one or two on the next page, then five on the third. No rhyme or reason to it. I also can't stand the full black page. Scott

I repeated the search and it's showing there's 85K results but just hanging and not showing any actual results. Same result if I hit Refresh. Google = 5.5 million and instant page load Cuil = 85K and the page doesn't load. Round 2: Google.

like many, initial impression not that great. I think the recipe for success are, simplicity, speed and relevancy, which I did not notice in my first trial

Let's launch a search engine that has serious bugs, hardware that crashes and not even put it out in beta first.. I hope they did not pay a fortune to obtain the domain name ;)

Ridiculously inaccurate. Do a search for Microsoft - the Microsoft home page isn't hit number 1. Lookie here: It's pure failure.[^]

I will write their next hit, maybe 'A boom-boom chiky chiky boom-boom a boom-boom chiky chaka chaka cho cho.' By the way, you must beware of Betty's iron claw. They are sharp, and they hurt. And beware his song about big butts, he beats people up while he plays it! " - Master Tang (from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist)
