Ah, I see. Well the A-level course is predominantly algebra-based, I believe. I'm mainly doing maths as it's a prerequisite for most university courses in IT here in the UK. Regards, --Perspx

As some of you may remember I posted here a few months ago to ask for advice on whether or not to use caffeine before an important exam I was going to take; after your feedback I decided not to use caffeine but instead get a couple of weeks of good sleep. It proved to be fruitful and I passed with 96%, getting me where I wanted to be :) In short, thanks for the advice from all that contributed :) Regards, --Perspx

What about fun stuff like Calculus? The first college I went to had pre-calculus/trigonometry as the requirement for any of their Computer Science courses. Calculus is actually pretty straightforward and easy in my opinion, once you have the Algebra out of the way.

Well the universities provide prerequisites for applications - usually the minimum grades are AAA or AAB at A-level, and also you usually need to have an A-level in maths; A-levels in physics and further maths are also seen to help your entry, too. Regards, --Perspx

Yep. Especially integration by trigonometric substitution. The guy who taught the class I was in, had a real tendency to obscure the problems on the test by multiplying things by factors, making us have to factor terms out just to get to the real problem.

When you get into physics, an introduction to PDEs ( partial differential equations) is helpful for dealing with Maxwell's equations. I did not have a formal background with PDEs and the physics teacher I had, did a good job at explaining how to work with PDEs to a bunch of us non math majors.

integration was my real problem with calc. Differentiation was easy, basic integration likewise, but every explanation of how to do integration by parts was NP. :doh:

I agree that integration by parts was so-so back in the college days. Nowadays, I look back at it in my old calculus text, and it makes more sense. I wish it would have made more sense during the final exams :rolleyes:

I got a D for Done in Calc III with Killer Cain at Tech. In retrospect, the class was not hard I was just not mature enough to deal with it. I would definitely take it over with him if I had the chance because I like his kind of Calculus.

I agree that integration by parts was so-so back in the college days. Nowadays, I look back at it in my old calculus text, and it makes more sense. I wish it would have made more sense during the final exams :rolleyes:

I've looked at mine and still say it's presented an NP problem and provides zero guidance on either proving P=NP, implementing a nondeterministic turing machine in my brain, or implementing a heuristic that produces correct results in common cases with polynomial time. 1 You look at a fugly integral. 2 You spit it into two functions which contain (typically fugly) integrals (this is an NP step) 3 If you can't solve the resulting integrals directly and the different terms don't cancel out the fugly parts repeat step 1 on one or more of the terms from step 2 (this is an NP step).

Yep. I recall my calculus teacher saying the trick is in splitting it up into something more manageable. He never really did give us any surefire way of figuring it out. I just figured maybe there was no real solid trick to deciding how to split.

Good job. I think you should quit while you're ahead. Nothing beyond Algebra has any practical use unless you want to be an engineer or something. BTW, did you join the Math Debate Team? Nothing like hanging out together and Mathdebating ... LOL.
