Opinion: Rise of PHP shows how msft dev tools have lost their way

Just put this on the CP Twitter feed (@thecodeproject). RT @jeffreymcmanus: our pal @andrewbrust: rise of PHP reveals MSFT how dev tools have lost their way "Remembrance of Code Past"[^] My favorite paragraph: "PHP and MySQL have beaten Microsoft at the game it practically invented. Together, they offer a programming environment with a low barrier to entry, high productivity, more-than-sufficient functionality, low cost and a wildly enthusiastic ecosystem of developers. Dial back to the early 1990s, and that was Microsoft. In the latter part of this decade, it most certainly is not."
Jeff, What's the direct URL for the CP twitter page?

Thanks Shog. I wonder how Jeff and Dave convinced Chris into this twitter thing. Maybe they set it all up while he was away on one of his biking trips :-D

Heck yeah - PHP has a real old-school BASIC feel to it, the very sort of quick-and-dirty tool that MS was built on. Keeps certain programmers productive but away from the sharp knives... Ok, i'll go read the article now. :-D
old-school basic feel of bad code and spaghetti logic.

I suppose Visual Web Developer Express (or whatever it's called) is Microsoft's response. Trouble is, while the price is right for the hobbyist developer, the learning curve is just the same as Visual Studio Standard, so it takes a significant time investment to learn how to use it. And I would have to say that even as a professional developer (I do get paid for my development skills :-)) I'd be as happy or happier using Apache+Python+SQLite for a little (or not so little) web-site - there's less getting in the way than with ASP.NET - although that's just an uninformed opinion, as I've never used ASP.NET. I have used Python and stuff for web development though :)
Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p

At first glance I read that as '...one of his bikini trips' :suss:

Aah, for a nice bowl of spaghetti logic season with a warm and lumpy cup of tag soup.

Interesting... the "PHP on Windows Training Kit" mentioned in the article requires Vista or higher (no XP). Kinda kills the "low barrier to entry" comment. ;P
Does it really, or have they just inserted into the docs?

Come on, man... be nice, they're trying to move this thing. The We7en RC is out now, they've only a few more months left to pretend it wasn't the slowest rush job in history... ;)

True, it's just fun to watch when the blood sucking monopolists and the frigtarded "all software should be free" crowds play in the same sandbox.

I just had a look, and they are ridiculous. They setting up PHP on a system that's using only MS tech for the webserver, DB, etc. I've used PHP at work and we *never* use it this way, it's too much hassle. Win2K or better, Apache, PHP, and you're good to go. If you want a DB slap MySQL, SQLite, FireBird, etc on it, and you don't have to fight with all the hassle of an Oracle or MS SQL Server setup.
