Heck yeah - PHP has a real old-school BASIC feel to it, the very sort of quick-and-dirty tool that MS was built on. Keeps certain programmers productive but away from the sharp knives... Ok, i'll go read the article now. :-D

I suppose Visual Web Developer Express (or whatever it's called) is Microsoft's response. Trouble is, while the price is right for the hobbyist developer, the learning curve is just the same as Visual Studio Standard, so it takes a significant time investment to learn how to use it. And I would have to say that even as a professional developer (I do get paid for my development skills :-)) I'd be as happy or happier using Apache+Python+SQLite for a little (or not so little) web-site - there's less getting in the way than with ASP.NET - although that's just an uninformed opinion, as I've never used ASP.NET. I have used Python and stuff for web development though :)

Interesting... the "PHP on Windows Training Kit" mentioned in the article requires Vista or higher (no XP). Kinda kills the "low barrier to entry" comment. ;P

I just had a look, and they are ridiculous. They setting up PHP on a system that's using only MS tech for the webserver, DB, etc. I've used PHP at work and we *never* use it this way, it's too much hassle. Win2K or better, Apache, PHP, and you're good to go. If you want a DB slap MySQL, SQLite, FireBird, etc on it, and you don't have to fight with all the hassle of an Oracle or MS SQL Server setup.

That's what I thought as well. However I will admit that we use PHP at work because it's less hassle to setup and program in. However it should be noted that most of our solutions are internal, and tend to be pretty basic.

Yes, I'm sure they're struggling with this. It's free you idiot. And for many quick and dirty applications, that's all you need to know. How does this guy get paid to write this drivel? "There were good reasons for Microsoft to focus on the enterprise." Yep, there sure are: lots, and lots of money. Spent year after year, project after project regardless of success rates or suitability. No mom and pop shop is going to be able to throw money around like a corporation is perfectly happy to do.
