The company I work for does biometric time & attendance, access control, and shop floor data collection solutions. I've been developing the time & attendance package single handedly over the past two years, were busy running live beta's of it at LO'real SA, and SAFAIR :cool: Were currently busy integrating the access control features into my T&A package. Why do ya ask?

He claims cheaper upgrades, personally I have no idea, never looked into 'em before.

You cant go wrong with the AMD Phenom X4 chips, it performs like a mother fucker and its not very expensive. We payed ZAR6299 for this rig(incl chassis, PSU, DVD Writer, etc...) Yes the Intel i7 chips or what ever is better, but they're also way WAY more expensive. AMD chips give you value for you hard earned cash :)

I always have been an AMD aficionado, but last time I decided to go with an Intel Core i7 920 and it's a beast. Quite expensive compared to AMD Phenoms, but worth the difference IMHO. It's also very quiet with the stock cooler and temperature stays at 36°C in idle, which is very low. Maybe next time AMD will be the best choice (it used to be faster and cheaper, now it's just cheaper). The thing to consider is that spending 200€ more for a PC is not that big of a problem and you probably get a faster PC which in turns makes development more efficient or at least a bit less painful.

I evaluated the difference to be within 200€, which is not that much considering that I use PCs for roughly 3 years before upgrading. In my opinion, the difference in price is totally worth.

I'll be pricing up my options soonish, will do an i7 920 option to see how that compares. My budget being around £600, adding an extra €200 might be a bit too much, but I'll add it all up and see if I can stretch to it. 36C idle is quite amazing though!

Vista? ;P Serious: If you do 3D rendering I can imagine it being handy. Other than that probably not but it allows for having a lot of programs open at the same time giving your boss the impression your working like hell :)

I told them I wanted 22-inch monitors. Currently, I'm on a Dell single-core box running 2gb of RAM and a single 19-inch monitor, but my new system will be a quad core intel box with 8gb orf RAM (when they order it).

I'm working an a Hewlett Packard dc7900... Okay, 4 GB mem and an extra 1 TB harddisk, as well as a nice GPU for being able to handle my 24" display, but still... A bit of both, all I needed the graphics card for is for my 2nd screen. I too have a 24" LCD on my dev box accompanied by a 19" LCD

I'm developing on an HP DX7400m, we added a GeForce 8500GT 512MB GPU to it for the 2nd screen. The main reason for getting this new box is I'll have to run 2 or 3 VM's at a time testing some SQL related stuff :cool:
