Do we really need Java runtime?

The LunaticFringe’s post bellow reminded me that I’m willing to ask this question from some time. I’m tired to fight with this annoying Java VM updates, which is impossible to be turned off. In fact I started to love UAC because of this – it’s my only friend against Java updates. So my question is what I’m going to miss if I just uninstall the thing? I’m not doing Java from years now and I hope I’ll never do it again, so development is not an issue. I don’t care about the websites build with Java – they are very few, so what I’m missing? BTW - Happy Friday to all!

Once in a very long while I run across some web based app almost always put out by a university somewhere that I want to try out that requires java but it's getting fewer and farther between. Unless you need open office I think it's pointless.

I think OpenOffice uses Java for something or other. I think it's even part of the installer.

Have you read how the TIOBE index is assembled? http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/tpci_definition.htm[^] The ratings are calculated by counting hits of the most popular search engines. The search query that is used is +"<language> programming" Maybe the index is that high because Java raises the most questions... ;P

the only thing i know of that uses it on my pc is the facebook picture uploader. i would remove it, but the wife may kill me :doh:

The form filler and checker of the Hungarian Tax Agency is written in Java - they were forced by the Linux community after become mandatory to use their software to do the "paperwork". It still has not the best UI but it became more advanced in two years than the previous one written in Delphi became in four years. Good libraries are treasure.

I removed it from registry and I never get asked for updates. I do not think you will miss anything, practically no site uses Java these days.

But my favourite IDEs are Java! But, no, I don't know of any killer apps in the desktop space so you probably don't really need it.

Intall CCleaner http://download.piriform.com/ccsetup228.exe[^] Run CCleaner, go to Tools -> Startup Select the Java Updater and disable or delete it. May also want to disable a bunch of other junk that is running in the background. But to be save just disable them until you are sure everything works as expected. Then you can go back and delete them.
