Yes, that's pretty much all I've been doing for the past year. That and taking long naps.

Simple. The univoter was bitter that Ravi had found a way to get paid for something he loved doing, while the univoter was having to endure 8 hours/day of suckage for his paycheck.

Coding was a hobby long before I made money at it and I still enjoy it - even after 327 years. :-)

Like what, for instance? I'm curious as to what you're thinking. I also have many other hobbies and sports - if I didn't need the money I might increase my time with those and lessen my time with programming but I would never stop doing it. Will definitely restore a classic car at some time - maybe a Lotus or Jensen Healey or E-Type.

Travel for one. I know you like to go abroad so I wold imagine that you would want to do this more than create some relatively useless program.

Yeah, there you go. I always fancied a Triumph Bonnevile to do up. SOmething simple, small, but interesting. Or a BSA Gold Star perhaps. (Used to actually drive a prereg Triumph Herald. It really was a dog. I guess I kind of got fed up with old cars then!)

I'd probably spend most of my time doing whatever else was my main occupation, but I'd definitely still program, as a hobby in its own right, but also to support my other hobbies - for example I've been known to write scripts to run on my Canon camera.

Probably, for friends/family or just learning. But I have several hobbies and those take time. As do children.

I'm just a "hobby coder" anyway. I programmed in dBase II like 20+ years ago and actually got paid for it. But I cannot make myself work in an office environment. I lasted a couple of years and I was outta there. Nowadays it's a fun hobby, and I would never mess it up by doing it for a living again. :)

I started programming about 30 years ago for fun. When I first started to get paid for it, it was also fun. Now it basically sucks. And when I get home from work I have absolutely no desire to do any of it on my own. So yes, I long for the day when I no longer have to do it for pay but can do it for fun again. Mark me down for a 5.

I don't get paid for it but I've coded quite a bit, currently spend about 10 hours per week. I consider it a hobby, Have a project I'm focused on, it's big it's bad, its ambitous, it will probably take me ten years to complete it :)

No. I can't really imagine anything I'd want to write code for that someone else has already done or is doing. I'm a maintenance programmer not a "developer" so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Being the only one to follow your instructions (so far): 4. I get ideas from time to time and get excited enough about them to put off other activities for a while. Not new algorithm ideas, just new applications, and just for a while, not for a long while.

Strangely enough I consider programming to be an outlet for my creative side. I never expected it to become a big part of my job. In fact, it isn't a requirement of my position, just a helpful tool. But my game programming now takes the place of what used to be candle making and plastic embedding.

I'm not a programmer but I play one at the office

Yes, I do. I get paid to write code at work. Then I go home, and I write code that I don't get paid for. Not the same stuff - work projects aren't interesting enough, at home I try out new things, or languages, and have occasional projects that I never finish. Often what I do at home leads into future work projects. I first started playing with WPF at home because I thought it was cool, then a project came along that was suited to what I'd learnt at home. If I wasn't a professional developer, I would still continue the home coding, but maybe I'd finished those projects once in a while.
