My answer is 5 ("yes"), but only for selected projects for friends or non-profit organizations.

Yes, if it served the purpose of solving a problem at home or for a friend.

5: I believe that is how I got started in programming in the first place. I was doing construction and writing software for my own amusement at night. Drove my wife nuts until she suggested I do it for a living. It appears that was good advice. Thanks Dear.

Yes, I do. I get paid to write code at work. Then I go home, and I write code that I don't get paid for. Not the same stuff - work projects aren't interesting enough, at home I try out new things, or languages, and have occasional projects that I never finish. Often what I do at home leads into future work projects. I first started playing with WPF at home because I thought it was cool, then a project came along that was suited to what I'd learnt at home. If I wasn't a professional developer, I would still continue the home coding, but maybe I'd finished those projects once in a while.

Most definitely yes. I code for work and then at home I code for fun and to try out new things. I've been doing this for more years than I would care to mention, though I will say that my first code was done on punched cards.

In that case I would not do anything else. No bosses. No customers. No silly demands or requirements. What a dream.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

I know I am late, but I thought I will put my view as well. Yes. I want to be an ethical Hacker. So I just cant quit coding! :)

Computer programming is an extraordinarily precise activity, be precise.

I voted 4. I love coding, but it's not the only thing I love to do. I love to sport, see a movie, read a book, etc. If I was supported for (which I wouldn't like, cause I'd have too much free time), I'd devide my time between my interests.

I had to "Topeka" translate that to... small children, small worries, big kids, big problems ? Yeah, true. Teenagers are nightmares. Well, at least my daughter was when she was 17. But eventually they move out and the nightmare becomes their own. And you get to watch the nightmare from afar as if on tv. And laugh when Karma takes it's toll. Well, not laugh, offer support, you know :) It's weird having a kid out there in the wild. My son, 14, is showing signs of being no problem at all. We'll seee... Good luck with your's :)
