So, the extremists are up in arms because South Park has depicted a certain religious figure in a bear suit. Apparently it's all right to have a go at Jesus, Scientology and the likes, but you can't say anything negative about Islam. Clickety.[^] Let the univotes commence.

This is so true and is an injustice in society on a par with the fact you can only say negatives about white hetrosexual males. On a side note I have just realised that I dont think I have ever seen any images of allah. Can anyone sketch me a couple of pictures and e-mail it to me so I know what he looks like?

Probably one of the funniest things I've seen in ages, particularly given they did show him in 'person' on an episode years ago and no one cared.

As he doesn't exist and is merely the fantasy delusions of pre-mediaeval middle-eastern toss bags who couldn't get laid so they invented a so called religion in order to subjugate woman and treat them as chattels*, I am afraid I cant show you a picture. Perhaps a picture of someone who did exist and who did great works would be more spiritually enlightening. Here is one.[^] Scientist, Poet, Mercantor and Diplomat. *In much the same way as Judaism and Christianity (They both have a separation of men and women, albeit to a lesser extrent, which is why all religion is bunkum and clerics of all religions are the biggest bunch of fu#k-knucklers who try to interfere and control, and try to charge for the priveledge) Get religion out of faith and spirituality and the world would be a happier place.

The REALLY funny thing is that the whole point of it was to poke fun at extremists who complain about things like that....irony doesn't translate into Arabic I guess....

I have to take issue with this. Arabic != Muslim and, equally Muslim != Arabic. I know many Muslim Arabs, and in general they are much more liberal than the common perception of people in the West. Most could easily be compared to the Muslim equivalent of Italian or Greek Chritians, so religious but not "jihadist-nutters" by any stretch of the imagination. The problems arise because the nutters are more vocal, visible and the media loves to show them. the one-eyed-hook guy must have been a boon for Sky News. For the most part the people I know won't be happy about the cartoon, but they are more disgusted by the behaviour of the extremists.

Whilst I completely understand your point, I think you may be reading a little too much into an off the cuff remark...of course not all muslims speak arabic and of course not all arabic speakers are muslim... Totally agree however with the point of most muslims being less up tight about these things and the extremists having the louder voices...

The problem is that the extremists have effectively taken over the religion. Not just Islam, but Christianity too. Look at current events and how things are going. Nutjobs kill a bunch of innocent people with planes. Islam says "We are not like that. Those guys were nuts." Christian right says "Those muslims are nuts and should all be killed. Bomb them to the stone age!" And the rest of the christians just sit there and watch shaking their heads. Both groups stay quiet as the extremists do things that degrade people, devalue them and continue to propagate a view that allows these things. So instead of having religions of peace and love, we have groups of jackasses doing horrible things and the silent majority allowing it. At no point in time have we heard a loud, vocal, overwhelming condemnation of the actions of the right by the center in these religions. No large group standing up and saying "WTF MATE?! SHUT UP AND QUIT DOING EVIL IN THE NAME OF OUR RELIGION!" Instead they sya "those are extremists, we aren't like that." Well, if they allow them to continue, don't stand up to them and stop them, THEY ARE LIKE THAT. They have effectively given the extremists tacit approval and are just to cowardly to be forthright about it. They are just as much a part of the problem as the nutjobs because they don't have the backbone to try and stop them.

The problem with the situation is we'd be looking at somehow forming a group of militant moderates to combat these people. While it's something of a goal to get labeled a moderate extremist(or somehow cause that label to appear on Fox News), I haven't figured out how to manage it. These idiots aren't going to just sit down and shut up because their own tell them to, they're just going to consider them fair targets as well, and most people are far from willing to paint a target on their back intentionally. And I have to note, some people have spoken out quite loudly against both groups, from both groups, but no one seems to give a shit when people attempt to handle things responsibly.

The establishments haven't been doing it. People will speak out, but the groups don't. "God hates Fags." "Hi, we are the (insert denomination here)church hierarchy and we believe these people to be wrong, extremists, misguided, and generally stupid people that need to read the new testament, and have a heaping glass of stfu" Doesn't happen. "Hi, I am a high ranking cleric in charge of a large group within Islam and we believe the prophet's words have been twisted by these guys. He never said attack people sitting around doing nothing more than their jobs and kill them. They need to listen to the words of the prophet." Maybe if something like that happened we might see some change. If the groups attack them, these groups get shown for what they are and people will stop joining them or at least doubt their motives. I wish more people would try and handle these extremists in a responsible manner.

Apparently it's all right to have a go at Jesus, Scientology and the likes, but you can't say anything negative about Islam. Clickety.[^] Let the univotes commence.

Maybe we should form our own religion (the First Church of Bob). Our one tenet will be that we hate everyone who doesn't belong. We could bill it as the first honest religion. ;)

Hey, if L. Ron Hubbard can pull this off, a bunch of clever computer geeks shouldn't have any trouble, right? We can start by lobbying politicians for equal time; any religious displays on public property should henceforth include a small statue of Bob. Huh? Huh? :-D

ALL HAIL BOB!!! Though I am amused at images of the FSM being put in some places by devoted pastafarians and might try to join them instead.
