Sexism in the forums

When answering questions, I find myself always referring to other OP's as 'he' or 'him'. Now if I see the person's full name (and it's a Western Name), that may be all right. However, lots of OP's use aliases, and to be honest, I'm at odds to determine a person's sex from his/her name when it's an African or Asian name. On the other hand, I don't want to write he/she or her/him all the time, as it cramps my style, and wears out the keyboard. Would it be a good idea to add this information to the OP's profile, and maybe overlay the OP's icon with a little symbol that allows us to address people politely and correctly? (Chris, and think of the data mining possibilities: statistics on the battle of the sexes, who gets the most 5's, who writes the most crap articles? :-D )

Meh, just pick "he" or "she" and live with it. If somebody asks about you, I'll just say "she was worried over nothing". :rolleyes: EDIT: I suppose you could be a female, but I'm going to assume you're a man and that I correctly incorrectly called you a woman. :)

Unless it is someone you know to be a girly, assume male. If they aint they will correct you, and most will be male anyway. The standard letter format in business is Sir.

Meh, just pick "he" or "she" and live with it. If somebody asks about you, I'll just say "she was worried over nothing". :rolleyes: EDIT: I suppose you could be a female, but I'm going to assume you're a man and that I correctly incorrectly called you a woman. :)

If you don't know someone's gender, then "he" is the correct address, because it is (and always has been) gender neutral, as well as the masculine pronoun. PC alternatives sicken me. Language is for communication, not wheedling. I'm sure that the ladies amongst us are quite capable of letting you know you should use the feminine pronoun (if indeed they want a bunch of devs to know that they're girls).

Sexism, a term coined in the mid-20th century,[1] is the belief or attitude that one gender or sex is inferior to, less competent, or less valuable than the other. Calling an anonymous poster "him" on this forum is, basically, good old statistics. I don't say "him" because I think a girl can't program, I say "him" because it's right significantly more often. Feel free to downvote me for my next statement: If she feels discriminated by having to point out my mistake to receive the correct attribution, it's not my problem. Get help, or at least learn to ask for it. If there are 5 girls on this world who won't enter CompSci because they have been called "he" on a forum two times in a row, get lost. You ego is in the way, not your gender.
