On more failure for MS.

Oh, please. Given how many things MS releases, it's hardly surprising that some of them flop. I'll can Vista as much as the next person, but how was Windows 95 a failure ?

We're not going to have this "Microsoft is doomed. Doommed!" stuff again are we? Have you seen their recent numbers? I wish I was as doomed as they are.

Same question like Christian Graus asked "How Window 95 is a flop?". Or did you meant to say 98 (not 98 SE)?

Take windows 95 off your list and substitute windows 3.11 and I'll agree with most of what you said, though I don't think Vista was a flop anywhere near the level of Windows ME which was disastrous by comparison.

Windows 95 wasn't as successful as it was supposed to. Hardware USB, AGP and Intel's P6 had a very little or no support in early versions of Windows 95, and all these got resolved in Windows 98.

Despite the people who queued up at midnight to buy it ?

From Wikipedia: Intel introduced AGP support with the i440LX Slot 1 chipset on the 26th of August 1997 and a flood of products followed from all the major system board vendors also The USB 1.0 specification was introduced in January 1996 Windows 95 was released in August, 1995. So, Windows 95 didn't support something that DIDN'T EXIST on release, but support was added with the next OS ? Wow.

Much as I'm not an MS fanboy, I thnk a lot of stuff on his list represents iterative steps towards the things that were successful. Sure, MS should sometimes release later and do more internal testing, but ME, for example, was a stopgap forced upon them by late delivery of 2000 ( as I recall ). ActiveX was a perfectly good idea, at the time. Vista sucked, but it represented the first step towards a more secure OS, in that sense, it did it's job and they have worked from there to make W7 better than Vista was.

I'm dying for you to explain the timeline of Visual Studio versions, and how iterative steps improve their quality. :)

Good point. I would say some of those 'failures' made the right ground in people expectations for the next product. :)

Visual Studio is a whole different thing. I think one big issue with it is that MS is trying to work out how committed they need to stay to C++, and at what point they can hope to have killed it.
