Oh, please. Given how many things MS releases, it's hardly surprising that some of them flop. I'll can Vista as much as the next person, but how was Windows 95 a failure ?

Same question like Christian Graus asked "How Window 95 is a flop?". Or did you meant to say 98 (not 98 SE)?

Windows 95 wasn't as successful as it was supposed to. Hardware USB, AGP and Intel's P6 had a very little or no support in early versions of Windows 95, and all these got resolved in Windows 98.

Take windows 95 off your list and substitute windows 3.11 and I'll agree with most of what you said, though I don't think Vista was a flop anywhere near the level of Windows ME which was disastrous by comparison.

Much as I'm not an MS fanboy, I thnk a lot of stuff on his list represents iterative steps towards the things that were successful. Sure, MS should sometimes release later and do more internal testing, but ME, for example, was a stopgap forced upon them by late delivery of 2000 ( as I recall ). ActiveX was a perfectly good idea, at the time. Vista sucked, but it represented the first step towards a more secure OS, in that sense, it did it's job and they have worked from there to make W7 better than Vista was.

Good point. I would say some of those 'failures' made the right ground in people expectations for the next product. :)

Visual Studio is a whole different thing. I think one big issue with it is that MS is trying to work out how committed they need to stay to C++, and at what point they can hope to have killed it.
