Why? Just because the support ended does not mean it will stop working. I'm not "using" it, but I'm not going to upgrade my old computer just because "support ended". XP x64 SP2 on my new computer - there is no SP3 for it.

That's because it isn't XP. It's Windows Server 2003 with the Themes service enabled.

It hasn't worked for years ;P . My PC at work is XP SP2. In boredom last year I installed SP3 and it refused to boot from that point on. Our desktop support team took 3 weeks to get it back to me, and at no point did they ask me what I had been doing before it stopped working.

I just had a coworker root through an old MSDN box looking for a Windows 98 disc so he could install a driver for a dot matrix printer he just inherited. WTF.

That last part is certainly true, but I would say that since they called it XP, it is also XP, just a different kind of XP
Quite right. XP 32 bit editions are the ones with SP2 now retired and SP3 the currently supported version. XP 64 bit was built on the 2003 Server kernel (that is not the same as 2003 Server with themes enabled by the way) and is currently on SP2. It will be retired along with Mainline support for 2003 Server. Oops! 2003 Server went out of mainline support yesterday as well, so goodbye XP 64 bit. The only remaining mainline supported XP versions are therefore 32 bit SP3

I went to the master index[^] for life cycle data; but the listing for XP64[^] is odd. It claims that XP64-SP2's release date is not available (if you look at dates for other retired SP's they all list the release date); but otherwise has the same marking as existing current SP's. That said because XP64 never achieved widespread usage MS has already dropped support for it in some of their applications; IIRC including office 2k10 and windows live desktop apps.

I thought service packs are accumulative. The lastest one includes all fixes in the previous ones. If that is the case, retiring SP2 does not really mean anything.

Until today MS issued XP patches and would write hot fixes for both XP SP2 and XP SP3. They're now only doing it for SP3; which means all people who're still on SP2 are no longer getting security updates until they updated to SP3. The group includes an appalling large number of enterprise computers.

Not entirely sure, seems like spite to me; it's not like the /. crowd would rant any less (from their Linux boxes) about MS releasing something that could be uninstalled on an unsupported platform and went boom than if they just blocked the install. The decision to stop officially supporting XP64 is more understandable; it didn't have a user base large screaming for an extended lifecycle so they're pulling the plug wherever they can for cost reasons. XP64 is only .56% of systems in the steam hardware survey; which is probably higher than in the wider world because gamers are more likely to have high end systems needing a 64bit OS.

That is why I mentioned that 2003 Server has just gone out of support. XP64 SP2 was the 2003 Server Service pack because of the shared kernel. So goodbye 2003 Server, goodbye XP64, goodbye XP32 SP2 and earlier. While we are at it many people still use Office 2003 but that was retired from mainstream support last year. Time to wake up and catch up people!

Spent yesterday upgrading the office to SP3, not because of this but because VS2010 requires it.
