Google Translate

So, we have a Japanese exchange student staying with us. She seems nice, but communication is hard. The life saver is Google Translate, if I really need to tell her something ( such as making sure she orders a meal she will like ), that's what I use. But, I'm unsure - does a Japanese computer have a QWERTY keyboard ? If I give her google translate from Japanese to English with a Western keyboard, can she use it ? Babelfish does not work on my iPhone, but Google Translate does, funny enough.

Mmmhh never have this problem before. All japanese people I met knew English so what we usually did was show each other how to say something exotic/odd/rare on each language. But if you want to say something to her I'd try this XD Talking seriously,I'd never come up with this question, sure I'd like to find out too.

But if you want to say something to her I'd try this XD Talking seriously,I'd never come up with this question, sure I'd like to find out too.
That is super cool. Not sure how it would fly, but it won't arrive in time, so I won't have to worry, I guess.

Yup - 'good on ya' turned into 'good shop' though - wonder if that's a Japanese colloquialism? [edit] For the record, Google.ca translated 'She be right mate, strewth good on ya.' to the above, but translated it back as 'She's right mate, I'm serious! Good shop.' [/edit]

ROTFL - see, I've thought I should do that, to give me some idea of how bad it is. I am careful in the words I choose when I use it with her, just to try to avoid such misunderstandings.

Yup - careful is good - keep it simple and translate back. Er, and perhaps phrases with 'mate' in them are best avoided in this context. :)

There are Japanese keyboards. But I used to work at a company that had some Japanese engineers at the Swedish representatives office. They were given computers with multilanguage XP and Office with US keyboards. They were quite happy with that, as they used something called IME[^] to type Japanese phonetically. It's been included with windows since XP, but is also available as a download.
