I see Bill Gates is giving 20 million dollars to IT education in India. Is that like, 3 cents a person ? It's small change compared to how much they can save by moving development work there, from what I understand of wages there. Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002 Hey, at least Logo had, at it's inception, a mechanical turtle. According to this[^] the $20 million is only 1/20th of the whole pie. I don't care what or where you're talking about - $400 million is a "chunk of change"!!!! Mike Mullikin

The article I read had the figure at $400 million. 200 million to an education centre based in Hyderabad, and the rest to something else (I forgot what). Cheers The universe is driven by the complex interaction between three ingredients: matter, energy, and enlightened self-interest.

The cost of living is less because people consume less. Most people do not have cars and use public transport. Food and accomodation is extremely cheap compared to western price levels; because most people cannot afford them unless they are offered at that price. 500 dollars is very good amount in India because rent for a 3 bedroom house in a great location could be 100 dollars. But, as income rises, the prices also rise. I think that as more and more foreign companies and investment come in, India will becoame as expensive as US or any country in Europe. That is what I expect globalization to do. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

And you would be correct. Like any other developing economy, until labor becomes organized, and the population feels they have a right to demand better healthcare, environmental rules, streets, policing, education, etc,. etc., labor is available at a discount, but as the standard of living increases, so do the costs, the taxes, and the wages paid all in lock-step. I'm sure you can get more than Vanuatua for that price including the relocation costs. Is it for sale ? Regardz Colin J Davies

We have a saying too. Something about smelling what you're shovelling... My point is that when companies blow their own trumpets about stuff like this, it's often donations of product ( which in this case means each $200 is more like 2 cents ), and it's for their own benefit. Its $100 over 10 years, with a population of 1 billion. That makes 1 cent per person per year Revenue from M$ sales per year............ Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

The $400 million is investment in software production. The 'gift' is $100 million over 10 years, or 1 cent perhead of population per year :~ Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
