The rule that I remember from early grade school is that the final consonant is doubled if the word is longer than three letters and ends with consonant, vowel consonant. So as Dave pointed out, travel -> travelled. The few exceptions I can think of involve a final y, which is not considered a consonant for the purpose of this rule.

Says all those countries in the world that use English as an official language. Although, to be fair, English is not an official language in the USA!

Er...no. In English it is Travelled. Some foreigners, who speak a hybridised, bastardised and almost incoherent variation of English, do tend to mispell words, but the English, whose language it is, would never spell travelled with one L! Hope that helps.

Then it must suck for you to live in the U.S. since our bastardized language offends you. ;)

Woow! Too many times I've seen announcements in some establishments like :"Se habla español" XD But well, what do they really own that's not imported (and then hybridized and bastardized ;P ) from another country?

"A European" is only confusing if you forget the rule is first sound, not first character. Hotel, Honor, etc only cause confusion because some accents have the h silent and others do not.

Oh yes they do! Pick up any newspaper, magazine, CV, or better still your five year old's latest school report and see how badly the "English" spell their own language.

I must get a clever new signature for 2011.

Actually it is prescriptive. The input is labelled "Subject:". *ducks*

                                          cheers, Paul M. Watson.
