A Serious Quandry

Here I sit, repeatedly logging on to my bank to see if my paycheck has cleared yet. Every time a new web page loads, my PC makes a noise like an asthmatic gasping for breath, as the fans kick in noisily to try to compensate for the heat load of displaying yet another graphic. I have a shiny, new unopened copy of Visual Studio 2010 Professional to install, and 180 MB of hard disk space left. :( The quandry is that, this being one of two three-paycheck months in a year, my bills are paid, and this check is allocated to nothing in particular; there's plenty here to build a new machine. But I set a goal this year to begin a dedicated effort to saving as much as I possibly can, being close to retirement age and having next to nothing in the bank. It doesn't help that NewEgg sends me emails every day to inform me that items on my Wishlist are on sale today. What would you recommend?

I'm working on that, and that's part of why I'm asking for advice. I've had several glasses of scotch, and may have a few more; I know from past experience that I occasionally make slightly suboptimal choices under these circumstances. Only occasionally, mind you, but it does happen.

I'm working on that, and that's part of why I'm asking for advice. I've had several glasses of scotch, and may have a few more; I know from past experience that I occasionally make slightly suboptimal choices under these circumstances. Only occasionally, mind you, but it does happen.

After a few drinks, it's best to have a rule and stick to it. the rule of Thirds is a goodie. Take your surplus cash. 1/3 goes to long term savings 1/3 goes to Next Paycheck's shortfall (and so becomes surplus if next paycheck covers the basics, but is there for unexpected expenses. 1/3 goes to whatever you damn well please, and you're not going to feel guilty even if it's a complete extravagance because you're special and plain deserve a treat now and again!

Hehehehe... I have to work in the morning. Besides, I lost $20 there yesterday while waiting for a contractor to meet me for a tour of the power line I want him to bid on rebuilding. I'm still a little miffed at Don Laughlin about that.

New PC.........live life in the fast lane. You could be hit by a bus tomorrow. You can get a pretty damn good PC for not a lot now, so why waste your life waiting for your PC todo something. Get with the program man, spend it! :)

You're a big man with lots more experience in dealing with things than I; who am I recommend anything to you? But, because you ask... First off, opt out of those promotional emails from discount websites (been there, done that). If you're really in need of a PC, go for it, there's no need to be hard on yourself. Save some money otherwise, because from what you say about your savings, it looks hightime now. :)

When the state announced a 2% reduction in state income tax for this year, I raised my 401K contribution by 2% - I'm still taking home more $$$ :thumbsup:

if you factor in your tme spent waiting, the risk of data los, the time for attempted data recovery and the additional cost of an emergency replacement, surely you can justify a new machine.

I miss being paid every 2 weeks. My last 2 jobs pay on the 15th and last day of the month. Takes the fun out of those 2 months of triple pay.
