When I saw news few months back that Windows 8 will be using Metro UI, I was hoping for rumor... but that was true. I cant believe they are using Metro UI for mainstream OS. I though they just figure it out that they cant use mainstream OS UI on mobile OS, but now who is going to make them understand that reverse way is even worse. Let's hope that you can change the theme back to Windows Aero. Mainstream OS UI should provide basic interface for client apps, and not tightly integrated apps inside UI as services... even if this is just for consumer version, They are trying to make users dumb after trying too hard to make them smart enough to use windows 98.
It's a shame that stupidity can't be converted into a usable energy source.

Write once, run anywhere...OS version. Desktop/laptop, tablet, phone. Just need different hardware layers.

Except that mouse/keyboard and touch are two very different things, and trying to force them to use the same operating system... Well, Asus supposedly pulled it off with the Eee Transformer... So maybe it's doable.

I hate it when people touch my monitor... To enable the touchy/feely crap, you have to buy a touch-capable monitor, which will undoubtedly be extremely over-priced. Finally, great. First they try to make our phones not be phones - now they're trying to make our computers not be computers.

Nah, Win2k was part of the NT line... 98 --> Me --> XP --> Vista -- 7 NT4 --> 2000 --> 2003 --> 2008

2000/NT4 was probably once of the most reobust platforms I've worked on.

I still have a few Win2K VMs on my laptop. It's the OS of choice if the particular technology I need to play with will work on it. And now that hardware has advanced so much, it boots along like someone is chasing it with a hot poker. I really think Microsoft should consider re-releasing it with a few minor tweaks and save the money they waste each year making Windows worse. -Richard

And most people don't buy new hardware* unless either the old hardware is no longer compatible, or the new one is substantially better than the old one. * Exceptions for Apple cultists, since IPods/IPads have become fashion statements, and people will buy a new one just because it's a different color.

Windows NT Professional and Windows 2000 professional were not server lines. Windows 2000 became XP.
Ok, bad choice of words... Business users, as opposed to home users... NT and 2000 weren't meant for home use. XP was.

I can agree with this. Win 98 to me just seemed like 95 with loads of extra unnecessary bloat bolted on like Active Desktop (which really slowed computers down at the time), the "Channels" thing and the channel bar which no one ever used, various other bloaty bits here and there to slow it down, etc. The only reason I eventually moved to it was due to drivers for USB devices requiring Win 98, despite the fact that the Win 95 version I had specifically said on the CD "With USB support". I never had 98SE though so dunno if things improved in that version and by how much. There were at least 2 versions of 95, if not more. The first one I had was an upgrade from 3.1 but not sure even that was the first version as it had titlebar animations on the minimize/restore unlike the animated boxes another version I saw had (unless that was a beta). Then I got a new computer which included 95 OSR2 which also had the OpenGL screensavers and other bits.

Yeah, no kidding... When did "using a computer" start to mean "taking pictures, browsing YouTube, and posting on Twitter"? Two things I do infrequently, and one that I've never done.

The remote desktop feature was useful, the server side of which wasn't in 2000 Pro. That's about it though, 2000 is still what I'd consider the most solid / stable version I've ever used.

Don't forget the odd/even rule... 30 - Bad 311 - Good (Relatively speaking) 95 - Ba--A general protection fault 0E has occurred... 98 - Good (Ok, better than 95) Me - Incredibly Bad XP - Good Vista - Makes WinMe look good by comparison 7 - Good Hmm, each bad version seems to be worse than the bad version before it... Which means 8 will be worse than Vista... That's a scary thought.
